Human Chain in Kerala Turns into a Huge Human Wall against Demonetisation Crisis

N S Sajith

THE extreme wrath of people against the inhuman reforms in the name of demonetisation got reflected in the formation of human chain across Kerala on December 29. Though the Left and Democratic Front had decided to organise a human chain, the colossal gathering of the people from all walks of life turned the human chain into a huge human wall. Lakhs of people joined together along the more than 700 kilometres long National Highway from Thiruvananthapuram to Kasargode. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan was the first person in the human chain in front of the Raj Bhavan in Thiruvananthapuram, while CPI(M)’s Lok Sabha leader and Central committee member P Karunakaran stood in the last part of the chain at Kasargode.

The massive participation in this programme reflected the anger of the people against the unpreparedness of the central government while announcing demonetisation and centre’s move to dismantle cooperative sector, the heart of Kerala’s economy.

In Thiruvananthapuram,   CPI(M) state secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, former chief minister VS Achuthanandan, CPI state secretary Kanam Rajendran, NCP leader Uzhavoor Vijayan, JDS Leader Neelalohitadasan Nadar, stood along with Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan in front of Raj Bhavan. CPI(M) leader Anathalavattam Anandan, co-operative minister Kadakampalli Surendran, joined the human chain at Thiruvananthapuram.

CPI(M) Polit Bureau member MA Baby along with CPI leader Pannian Raveendran joined the chain in Kochi while LDF convener and CPI(M) leader Vaikom Vishwan joined in Alappuzha, and CPI(M) Central Committee member and finance minister Thomas Issac and labour minister TP Ramakrishnan joined in Kozhikode. Central Committee member EP Jayaran and PK Sreemathi Teacher joined in Kanur while revenue minister E Chandrasekharan joined in Kasarkode.

Apart from LDF leaders, writers, film stars, musicians, sports persons, joined in the human chain in different parts. The chain was formed on the western side of the National Highway. People from non- National Highway districts Pathanamthitta, Kottayam districts joined the chain in various parts of Alappuzha district, while people from high range districts – Idukki and Wayanad formed separate chains.
