This is an intrusion in the right to privacy.Justifying the order, the government cites earlier similar order of 2009 issued by the then government.

TAMIL NADU: Thousands Throng Keezhvenmani to Pay Homage to Martyrs

FIFTY years ago, in the morning of December 25, 1968, the landlords of  Keezhvenmani village in East Tanjore district, Tamil Nadu, unleashed one of the most violent attacks on dalits in independent India, killing 44 people including women and children. The attacks began as the landless dalits in the village started to agitate for wage hike under the banner of CPI(M), which was gaining ground in the state.

2019: Big Battle Ahead

AS we reach the end of 2018, it will go down as the year in which the all-round failure of the Modi government on the economic front and the consequent burdens on the people became glaringly evident; the year also sharply brought out the cronyism and corruption of the regime; it also exposed the disruptive agenda of the Hindutva forces in seeking to subvert the constitution and the fundamental rights of citizens. The greatest failure of the Modi government was in dealing with the economy.  The agrarian crisis deepened causing widespread distress for the farmers and the rural poor.

On Telangana Assembly Elections

THE election results  for Telangana state, have  not only brought Telangana Rashtra Samiti  to power for the second term, but also, the incumbent Party, TRS improved its position considerably by winning 88 seats out of 119 seats of the assembly. The Congress alliance could scrap through with only 21 seats, including two seats for the TDP. TJS and CPI drew a blank. Two independents who won the elections have also joined the TRS, taking the tally of TRS to 90.  The AIMIM could retain all their seven seats. The BJP could win only one single seat out of 119 seats contested.

Slow Strangling of MGNREGS

HERE is a little known but chilling fact about the rural job guarantee scheme (MGNREGS): between April and mid-December this year, about 1.28 crore people who demanded jobs were turned back. This refusal to give work has been happening every year but it has increased after the Modi government came to power and it has already hit a record high with over three months still left in this financial year.Meanwhile from different states, there are reports of protests by labourers over delayed wages, blocked accounts, missing money, and no work.

Rafale Deal: A Controversial Judgement

THE Supreme Court Judgement by a three-member Bench on the Rafale Deal has become controversial even before the ink on the judgement has dried. Indeed, accepting notes in sealed covers, acceptance of governments arguments at face value, puts the court’s reputation at risk. The scope of judicial review was whether a) the defence procedures laid down were violated in the Rafale deal, and b) whether the Indian people have a right to know the price of defence deals.

Katowice Rules: Exacerbating Inequality in Tackling Climate Change

THE recently concluded UN climate conference in Katowice, Poland (COP24) was held to prepare a rulebook for the implementation of the Paris Agreement. The decisions adopted marked the further consolidation of the hold of the developed countries. The US is very much in the driver's seat in the negotiations along with the EU and others despite its announced withdrawal from the Paris Agreement and its public differences on climate action in forums such as the G-8. They are clearly designed to reinforce the inequitable and discriminatory aspects of the Agreement.

Remove Justice Sen from Judicial Duties

CPI(M) Polit Bureau, in session at New Delhi on December 14, has issued the following statementTHE CPI(M) condemns in unequivocal terms the recent utterances of Justice Sudip Ranjan Sen of Meghalaya High Court, in the form of a judgement which is against the basic structure of our constitution.  The Supreme Court had earlier given a verdict that secularism, amongst others, is a fundamental feature of our constitution.  Justice Sen reflects his political faith akin to RSS ideology of Hindu Rashtra.  By smuggling in his brazen communal view on partition and making an
