Kashmir: End the Clampdown

A MONTH has elapsed since the security clampdown on Jammu & Kashmir was imposed on August 5.  For 30 days, the people of Kashmir have been deprived of all basic rights. They have been confined to their houses. There is no communication with mobile phone networks, landlines and internet connection closed down; they have no right of movement with barricades being put up in main roads and highways; there is no public transport. Government offices have not been functioning as employees are unable to attend their duties.

CPI(M) Releases Booklet on Kashmir

CPI (M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury and Polit Bureau member Brinda Karat released a booklet prepared by the Party on Kashmir, titled ‘Fraud on Constitution: Kashmir Betrayed’. The booklet was released at a press conference held on August 22. It traces the history of Jammu and Kashmir and its accession to Indian Union. The booklet dispels the misinformation campaign and obfuscation of facts by the government on Jammu and Kashmir. 

Urban flooding

MUCH awaited monsoons in the country may be deficient in rainfall, but flooding even with scant rainfall has become a common phenomenon. The cities happens to be the worst resilient with the kind of infrastructure that has been constructed over the years. This leads to loss of lives and property. Just in three states, Maharashtra, Kerala and Karnataka, 227 people have died and the number may be higher as there are a large number of missing persons.

Reverse Decisions on FDI in Coal Mining & Retail Trade

CPI(M) Polit Bureau has issued the following statement on August 29THE Polit Bureau of the CPI(M) strongly opposes the decision of the union cabinet to allow 100 per cent FDI in coal mining for all commercial purposes along with 100 per cent FDI in contract manufacturing. This reckless measure will enable foreign companies to plunder the mineral resources of our country.This decision will also have a harmful effect on Coal India Ltd which is the premier national coal miner. The Modi government is bent upon weakening the public sector coal company.

Permission to Visit Yusuf Tarigami

CPI(M) Polit Bureau has issued the following statement on August 28THE Supreme Court heard the petition on habeas corpus filed by CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury to produce CPI(M) leader and four time MLA, Yusuf Tarigami whose whereabouts are unknown since August 5.The Supreme Court has ordered that Sitaram Yechury be permitted to visit Yusuf Tarigami in Kashmir. Accordingly Sitaram Yechury will travel to Srinagar tomorrow, August 29.
