How to Get the IMF to Think

WHEN will the International Monetary Fund (IMF) learn to think? Over its 81-year history, the IMF has published over 15,000 reports. Yet, if you download any one of the reports from its website, it is likely that you will know what is being said before you have even read it. The reports are so generic that you do not even need to ask ChatGPT to create a template: each document is a template for the next.

ECI’s Credibility Crisis: Chickens Have Come Home to Roost

THIS was waiting to happen. The tumultuous events of the last fortnight have brought into sharp focus a concerted assault on democracy – an assault unfolding at multiple levels. At the most basic, the very foundation of democracy and of the representative government – the constitutional right of citizens to vote – has been threatened through the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process in Bihar. The second dimension has been the sabotage of a constitutional body – the Election Commission of India (ECI) – which is mandated to act independently and ensure a level playing field.

Modi Govt Policies Harming Farmers: AIKS

THE All India Kisan Sabha (AIKS), in a statement issued on August 12, has strongly rejected the claim made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi that “the welfare of farmers is the highest priority” for his government. Nothing could be farther from the truth. The statement, made in the context of US tariffs being raised to 50 per cent and arm-twisting for a bilateral Free Trade Agreement (FTA), is merely an attempt to curry favour with farmers.

THE All India Kisan Sabha (AIKS), in a statement issued on August 20, has condemned the decision of the RSS-BJP led union government to scrap the 11 per cent import duty on raw cotton. The decision, notified by the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) is valid from August 19 until September 30, 2025. This decision will result in a reduction in the price of imported cotton which, in turn, will push prices of domestic cotton downwards.

Manifested to Manufactured History

ON the 79th Independence Day, after hoisting India’s national flag at the ramparts of the Red Fort, Narendra Modi delivered the prime minister’s ceremonial address to the nation. Curiously, he used the solemn occasion to extol the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). Modi said, “The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh’s 100 years of service to the nation is a truly glorious and golden chapter.”A moment that truly epitomised the RSS’s service to the nation was the eve of India’s independence.
