Mangalyaan Success: Putting it in Perspective

ON September 24, 2014 when the Mangalyaan spacecraft was inserted into Martian orbit as planned, with Prime Minister Modi present at ISRO’s Mission Control Centre in Bangalore, ISRO declared its maiden interplanetary mission, the Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM), a complete success. The Liquid Fuel Engine was fired at the right time as programmed, and the spacecraft was slowed down sufficiently to enable Mars to “capture” it within its orbit.

The Dalits And Undernutrition

IT is as if the fact that we still have manual scavenging six and a half decades after independence were not enough; it is as if the fact of the daily perpetration of the most horrendous atrocities on the Dalits was not enough; in the realm of nutrition itself, which constitutes the most elemental necessity of life, the condition of the Dalits has worsened quite remarkably over the decade-and-a-half between 1993-94 and 2009-10. This fact has got hidden until now by the utterly spurious “poverty” estimates that the Planning Commission under the neo-liberal regime has been putting out.

When Will Be the Knock at Mamata’s Door?

AFTER several of Trinamool Congress leaders and members of Parliament faced grilling by CBI and Enforcement Directorate in Saradha chit fund scam, the knocking at the door of party chief Mamata Banerjee seems imminent. According to media reports, CBI has now gathered enough evidence to track the trail of money laundering to the West Bengal Chief Minister’s gate. It has been reported that the central agencies are planning to ‘seek clarifications’ from the Chief Minister or her office on several allegations and deals that have come into light through series of interrogations.

Rajnath Denounces Political Killings, but Accepts Headgear from RSS Cadre Accused of CPI(M) Worker’s Murder

UNION home minister Rajnath Singh sparked a controversy during his two-day visit to Kerala, by gleefully accepting a headgear from RSS cadre Santhosh, a notorious criminal in Thiruvananthapuram and the first accused in the case of 2008 murder of CPI(M) worker V V Vishnukumar. Notwithstanding the fact that Singh called for ending the menace of political violence and killings, he adorned a headgear from the murder accused on his September 27 visit to the famous Sri Padmanabhaswami Temple in Thiruvananthapuram.

AIDWA Condemns NCW Chairperson’s Remarks

THE All India Democratic Women’s Association in a statement issued on October 1 has strongly condemned the recently appointed National Commission for Women chairperson’s reported efforts to exonerate the RSS and its leaders (who are prominent leaders of the BJP) of any agency in coining, and propagating the term “love jihad”. The remarks of the chairperson in this regard have been published in a leading daily on October 1, 2014.

Do Not Succumb to US Pressures For Unilateral Military Intervention

The Polit Bureau of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has issued the following statement on September 30.

THE Obama administration has been putting great pressure on India of late to join a US-led coalition against the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria. It may take advantage of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s presence in New York at the moment to make India fall in line with its plans.

PM’s Visit to New York & Washington Lack of Substance: A Dangerous Portend

PRIME Minister Modi’s visit to New York and Washington on the occasion of addressing the annual United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) turned out to be, as the PTI reported, of the nature of a “rock star celebrity”. His speeches at the Madison Square Garden and the annual rock star ritual that takes place every year on the occasion of the UNGA at New York’s Central Park confirmed once again that the mindset of a continuing Indian election campaign has not yet been discarded by Prime Minister Modi.
