Writers Rise in Protest against Growing Intolerance And Attack on Freedom of Expression

Decrying the rising intolerance and attack on the freedom of expression in the country as manifested by incidents such as the murder MM Kalburgi, Govind Pansare, Narendra Dabholkar and the lynching of Mohd Akhlaq, many eminent writers, as a mark of protest, have returned their Sahitya Akademi Awards or have resigned from the posts they held in the Sahitya Akademi. The employed part of the labour force consists of: wage and salaried workers (who are called “employees”); the self-employed workers with “employees” (who are called “employers”); and the self-employed workers without “employees” (among whom are “own account workers”, unpaid family workers, and members of producers’ cooperatives).

THE central executive committee of the Students’ Federation of India in a statement issued on October 20, has strongly condemned the latest move of the University Grants Commission (UGC) to scrap non-NET fellowships for the researchers. THE All India Kisan Sabha, in a statement issued on October 17, has condemned the blatant efforts of the BJP government in Gujarat to facilitate corporate land-grab and provide legal sanction to illegal land transactions. A MEETING of the four Left Parties - CPI, CPI(M), CPM Punjab and CPI(M-L) Liberation held on October 20 at Chandigarh to discuss the current situation in Punjab concluded that the desecration of Guru Granth Sahib is the handiwork of agencies who want to disturb peace in Punjab. They blamed the Akali-BJP government for the fast deteriorating situation in Punjab and held it responsible for the inept manner in which it was handled.
