THE All India Kisan Sabha, has submitted a memorandum to the secretary of the Competition Commission of India on January 19, on the adverse impact of Bayer-Monsanto merger on Indian peasantry and its objection to the merger.In the context of the Bayer-Monsanto merger, AIKS said that the notice provided by the Commission for public participation in its inquiry process as per Section 20 of the Competition Act 2002, is too short for meaningful public participation.

THE Delhi state committee of CPI(M), in a statement issued on January 20, has strongly condemned the decision of the Election Commission of disqualifying 20 AAP MLA’s on the issue of “office of profit” and sent for the approval to the President office. The decision is unfortunate and has never happened in the electoral history of India. SATYAPAL Singh, the minister of state for human resources development (HRD), and a former police officer, while speaking in the All India Vaidik Sammelan, has attacked the theory of evolution – which he foolishly calls Darwinism – asking that it be removed from school and college education. In this, he has been backed by Ram Madhav, the general secretary of the BJP, who has quoted the Christian Right on creationism – now called “intelligent design” – being a substitute for the theory of evolution.
THE Centre of Indian Trade Unions, in a statement issued on January 21, has expressed shock and grief at the incident of fire in a plastic factory in Bawana industrial area in North Delhi, on January 20, where 17 workers were charred to death. Many more workers got burn injuries and are under treatment. It is feared that the death toll may increase further.

He was aged 80 years.Khagen Das had migrated from erstwhile East Pakistan to Kolkata and did his schooling and college in Kolkata.
THE 10th Andaman and Nicobar state conference of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) was held on January 14, 2018 at Fidel Castro Nagar (Shaheed Bhavan, Anarkali), Port Blair.
