The February 1979 Revolution in Iran has been assessed as the most participative social revolution in the 20th century.  What were the key factors in the final years of the Shah’s rule that led to the Revolution? Iran under the Shah had the appearance of a strong, pro-western state.

On Ominous Developments in West Bengal

CPI(M) Polit Bureau has issued the following statement on February 4, 2019IT was way back in 2014 that the Supreme Court had asked the CBI to investigate on the larger conspiracy involved in the loot of crores of rupees of people’s savings by chit fund companies like Saradha, Rose Valley etc. For full five years, contrary to its loud promises, the Modi government did not move seriously on this matter. During this period, many of the Trinamool Congress leaders who were prime accused in these scams like MPs Mukul Roy and Hemanta Sharma, moved over to the BJP.

BJP’S Authoritarian Assault

CPI(M) Polit Bureau of has issued the following statement on February 2THE Polit Bureau of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) condemns the arrest of Anand Teltumbde by the Pune Police. He was taken into custody at Mumbai airport at around 3.30 am.It may be noted that the Supreme Court of India has granted this renowned scholar four weeks protection from arrest to enable him to obtain bail.

Mock Battle between BJP and TMC

THE Supreme Court order directing the Kolkata police commissioner to present himself before the CBI for questioning at a neutral venue and, at the same time, directing the CBI not to take any coercive action like arrest against the police officer has exposed the political posturing by both sides – Mamata Banerjee and the TMC government on one side and the BJP and the Modi government on the other. While Mamata Banerjee sought to project herself and her government, through her dharna, as victims of the machinations of the BJP government at the centre, the BJP has been loudly asserting that th

Venezuelans Stand Tall

SO the reasons for the US meddling and interference in the internal affairs of Venezuela are finally out, direct from the horse’s mouth. Of course it is about oil, gold, diamonds and all the other natural resources that Venezuela has. But above all, it is about something more, as US president Donald Trump has stated in his State of the Union, ceremonial address to the US citizens.

Meanwhile in Tripura

THE Vision document of BJP for the assembly election of 2018 had promised to give 50,000 government jobs to the unemployed youths of Tripura within one year if they formed government. But after 11 months of the BJP led government in office, the much hyped promise of 50,000 government jobs remains unfulfilled. Further, the moves of the government make it clear that it wants to close the doors of government employment for the youth.

Kerala Budget: Consolidating the Gains for Working People in Hard Times

THE Kerala budget which was presented to the assembly a day before the Union budget, has put the perspective of the working class in sharp focus. While the latter is full of non-stop jumlas aimed to subdue the brewing anger of the working people against its policies, the Kerala budget has signalled the consolidation of the gains for them. As the finance minister Thomas Issac rightly pointed out, the state suffered from two tragedies in the last year. The unprecedented rains caused the worst floods of the century bringing heavy damages to life and property.

Interim Budget Makes Mockery of Informal Labour’s Plight

AFTER its election in 2014, the Modi government had promised to create 20 million jobs in five years. However, the recent debate on the job creation data shows that unemployment is at its peak at the end of the five year term of the Modi government. Curiously the current government has rubbished this data, without releasing any of its own statistics. The argument being made by the spokespersons of the BJP is that this data does not represent the true picture as most of the livelihood has been created in the form of self-employment and is largely in the informal sector.
