The Fee Must Fall Movement: An Ongoing Struggle Towards Victory

IT is true that the history of public education has been fraught with neo-liberal, authoritative and regressive attacks on the promises of secular, scientific and accessible education in this country. It has been, however, at its core, also a history of continuous student struggles fought not just against these attacks but for an equal and just society. The debarring and imposition of fine on 11 students of Pondicherry University over protests against fee hikes are a reflection of this same anti-student sentiment.

HP: DYFI to fight for Employment & against Drug Menace

THE 12th state conference of DYFI Himachal Pradesh was held on January 8-9, 2022 at Shimla. The main slogan of the conference was “stop hate and drugs, provide employment”.The conference was held at a time when there was heavy snowing in Shimla and most of the roads leading to the state capital were blocked. Still, the delegates, some of whom had to walk to the town from miles away reached and attended this conference.INAUGURAL SESSION The 12th state conference was inaugurated by Kushal Bhardwaj, former state president and secretary of DYFI.

Dam Safety Act 2021: Damaging Democracy & Federalism

IN a country with over 5,701 large dams, 619 of them having crossed the age of 50 years, dam safety is a matter of great concern to our nation and addressing it is crucial for the lives and livelihoods of our people. So, any legislation which attempts to provide for surveillance, inspection, operation and maintenance of dams is bound to attract some attention.The Dam Safety Act 2021, passed in the winter session of the Parliament in 2021, and received presidential assent on December 13, 2021, gives us reasons to worry.

Karnataka State Conference of CPI(M)

THE 23rd state conference of the Karnataka committee of the   CPI (M) was held from January 2-4 at Gangavathi, Koppal district, in Comrades K Varadarajan and Balappa Nagar. The conference hall was named after veteran leader of the trade union movement and of the Party, Comrade B Madhava and another trade union leader Comrade R Srinivas who underwent life imprisonment (and was released after 16 years in jail) in a false case.

Kerala: SFI Leader Stabbed to Death by Cong Criminals

IN yet another brutal incident, on January 10, Dheeraj Rajendran, SFI leader of Government Engineering College Painav in Idukki district was stabbed to death by the criminals belonging to the youth congress and Kerala Students Union, the student wing of Congress party in Kerala.The incident occurred during the elections to the students’ union of Kerala Technical University. A group of armed criminals rushed to the campus and unleashed violence as soon as the elections got over. Nikhil Pailee, a youth congress leader and his gang attacked the SFI activists.
