A Dangerous Agreement to Sign

ON October 24-25, there were widespread peasant protests all over the country against the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) involving sixteen nations which India is currently negotiating. As negotiations near completion, such protests are escalating, with the All India Kisan Sabha planning to organise a nation-wide protest on November 4, just before the RCEP agreement is due to be signed.

Eyeless in Kashmir

THE Modi government has taken the outrageous step of sending a group of Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) to visit Kashmir on the eve of its being formally reconstituted as two centrally-administered union territories. The visit is totally out of line because 22 out of the 27 MEPs belong to far-right parties and are known to have right extremist views.

Telangana: Today Bandh in Support of RTC Strike

A COMPLETE bandh was observed in Telangana at the call given by the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TSRTC). This call was supported by all the opposition parties.A few buses of Telangana RTC plied which were run with the help of police escort. However this effort of the government did not succeed. To save the RTC, all sections of people have come forward and resisted the police repression.

Seminar on Draft New Education Policy

A SEMINAR on the draft New Education Policy(DNEP) was held on September 21, 2019 at the Ferozeshah Mehta Bhavan Auditorium, University of Mumbai; jointly organized by the School of Social Sciences (SSS) Mumbai, Bombay University and College Teachers’ Union (BUCTU) and University of Mumbai Academic Staff Association (UMASA). Kapil Patil, Member of Legislative Council(MLC)- Teachers’ constituency was chief guest and keynote address was delivered by Aniket Sule, of Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE – TIFR).

Google and IBM Fight on Quantum Supremacy

GOOGLE’S quantum supremacy claim has now been disputed by its close competitor IBM. Not because Google’s Sycamore quantum computer’s calculations are wrong, but because Google had underestimated what IBM’s Summit, the most powerful super computer in the world, could do. Meanwhile Google’s paper, which had accidentally been leaked by a NASA researcher has now been published in the prestigious science journal Nature.

Condemn Badal Chowdhury’s Arrest

CPI(M) Polit Bureau has issued the following statement on October 23THE Polit Bureau of the CPI(M) strongly condemns the arrest of Badal Chowdhury, leader of the CPI(M) in Tripura, while he was in the ICU of a private hospital in Agartala.The BJP state government has levelled false charges against Badal Chowdhury concerning his tenure as the PWD minister, in the Left Front government, in the execution of certain projects. Other senior officials including the former chief secretary of the state have been named in the FIR.

SITARAM Yechury and Mohd Yousuf Tarigami had an interaction with some of the press people at the former’s official residence at 36, Canning Lane in New Delhi on October 22.Sitaram Yechury said, today 80 days have passed since the people of Kashmir have been made incommunicado.
