Kerala Vows to Steadfastly Protect its Achievements

REALISING the clandestine and evil designs of various central agencies to topple the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government and scuttle the achievements made in the state in the last four years, lakhs and lakhs of people of Kerala rallied behind the LDF to announce their solidarity with the government. People, most of whom are the beneficiaries of the LDF government’s schemes, gathered in more than 30,000 centres in the state, and vowed to protect the government and its pro-people measures.

A Laudable Decision

THE CPI(M) in Kerala made a conscious decision to give more opportunities to youth and women in the upcoming local body elections in the state. The Party has fielded young candidates who are active members of the student and youth movement. In Thiruvananthapuram Corporation, 66 per cent of the CPI(M)’s candidates are women and many of them are under 30 years of age.In 2009, it was the CPI(M)-led LDF government which made a provision for 50 per cent for reserving the president and vice-president posts in panchayats, block panchayats, and district panchayats in the state for women.

Immiserisation Behind the Recovery

MINISTERS from Narendra Modi to Nirmala Sitaraman are talking about a recovery of the Indian economy from the pandemic-induced crisis. Even the Reserve Bank of India which estimated the second quarter GDP growth to have been -8.6 per cent, has seen signs of recovery in October.Of course there had to be a recovery from the deep abyss to which the lockdown had pushed the economy, as some degree of normalcy returned; it is no reflection of any virtue of the government.

Worker-Peasant Unity to Resist Neoliberal Policies

THE All India Kisan Sangharsh Coordination Committee (AIKSCC), a platform of nearly 250 peasant and agriculture worker organisations, and the joint platform of central trade unions, sectoral federations and associations have joined hands to give a clarion call against the continuous onslaught on the workers and the peasantry by the union government led by the BJP. The call is for a general strike and grameen harthal with village/block level chakka jaam on November 26 and joint demonstrations on November 27 at state/district/block centres.

TAMIL NADU: CWFI Holds Statewide Protest demanding Welfare Measures

The Construction Workers Federation of India (CWFI) held a statewide protest in Tamil Nadu demanding the implementation of welfare measures through the welfare board. There is undue delay in sanctioning scholarship for education, accident and death relief from the board. The other major demand is the sanctioning of Rs 3,000 as pension for construction workers above 60 years of age. The CWFI condemned the anti-worker policies of the state and the union government and opposed the codification of the labour laws.

THE discussion on November 13, between the representatives of the 29 farmers organisations of Punjab who are in continuous agitation for the last two months with the agriculture minister Narendra Singh Tomar and railway minister Piyush Goyal ended inconclusively due to the adamant stand of the Modi government. In addition to the national demands of repeal the three Farm Acts and Electricity Bill, the kisan leaders demanded immediate reinstatement of the goods train services to Punjab, permanent solution to the issue of stubble burning and payment of dues to the sugarcane farmers.

Kerala becomes the first state to eradicate extreme poverty

On the 69TH formation day of Kerala on November 1, the state achieved the historic feat of becoming the first state to eradicate extreme poverty. In a massive public meeting in Thiruvananthapuram, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan declared that the feat was achieved through collective will. The primary objective of the 'Nava Keralam' (New Kerala) initiative — which is to elevate Kerala's standard of living to be on par with developed countries — is not far away. He said that Kerala is already ahead of America in many respects.
