THE 104th Session of the International Labour Conference (ILC) of the International Labour Organisation (ILO) took place at the UN complex in Geneva from May 31 to June 13. A total of 5,912 accredited representatives consisting of the government, workers, and employers’ delegations from 169 member countries of ILO attended the conference as compared to 5,254 in 2014.

Brutal Attack on Construction Workers on IIT-Mandi Campus by Goons of Contractor

THE construction of IIT-Mandi campus in Kamand area has been going on since September 2013. At present, around 650 workers are involved in the construction work. Since the beginning of construction, no labour laws have been followed by the construction company employed by the premier institute and labour contractors. Almost two years have passed, but statutory and mandatory provisions have not been implemented.

Foundation Conference of Mid-Day-Meal Workers Federation Held in Bengaluru

THE foundation conference of Mid-Day-Meal Workers Federation of India – their first all India conference was held in Bengaluru from June 21-23, 2015. The city of Bengaluru which, in the recent years has witnessed large militant mobilisations of scheme workers including MDM workers has once again witnessed a massive mobilisation of Mid-Day-Meal workers on June 21 who had come from different parts of Karnataka to be part of a colorful rally of 10,000 Mid-Day-Meal workers, all clad in red, organised on the occasion of their first conference.

All India Strike of Construction Workers Held Successfully

AT the call of Construction Workers’ Federation of India, 1.5 million construction workers participated in the all India strike on June 1, 2015. In West Bengal, Tripura, Assam, Manipur, Bihar, Jharkhand, Jammu & Kashmir, Haryana, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, Maharastra, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh (Ghaziabad), Kerala, Tamilnadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, the strike was observed successfully.

Trade Unions Call for Countrywide Strike on Sep 2

AMIDST thundering slogans from the presidium and from the participant delegates, the National Convention of Workers held on May 26 in Mavalankar Hall in New Delhi adopted a declaration calling upon every worker in the country to go for a day’s General Strike on September 2, 2015.The convention called by the eleven Central Trade Unions along with independent National Federations was attended by delegates from all over the country, representing unions in organised, unorganised sectors and from the Scheme Workers. They were from both the public and private sector.

Central Trade Unions Lash Out Against Labour Policies

THREE central ministers, including Labour Minister Bandaru Dattatreya, had a taste of the anger among the working people of the country when Central Trade Union leaders, in one voice, criticised the government's anti-labour policies. The occasion was a meeting of Central Trade Unions (CTUs) called by the Labour Department on May 15 to discuss about the '10-point charter of demands', on which the CTUs were on struggle for the last six years.
