HARYANA: Outlaw Self-Styled Cow Vigilante Groups

ADDRESSING the media in Rohtak on June 30, CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury demanded the self styled cow vigilante groups to be outlawed  for their unabated criminal activities in the form of lynching mobs targeting especially the citizens belonging to minority communities and dalits. He expressed dissatisfaction over the belated response of the prime minister commenting that Mahatma Gandhi would have never accepted killings in the name of cows while he did not reveal what his government was doing to effectively deal with the lynch mobs or so called Romeo squads.

WEST BENGAL: Rallies Reclaim College Street

FIRST the students. Then the Left parties. On consecutive two days College Street, the ‘heritage’ road of struggles in Kolkata witnessed defiance.

Mamata Banerjee government has banned all rallies, meetings in College Street – the place where Calcutta University, Presidency College are situated. Many other educational institutions are nearby. The entire area is also called ‘Fleet Street’ of the orient because of its book shops. The road is witness to many historic movements from the days of freedom struggle.

Mounting Communal Violence in West Bengal

SINCE the start of July, communal conflagration and tensions mounted in large parts of North 24 Parganas district. The district, along with Howrah, Birbhum and Maldaha, has witnessed communal clashes in recent months. Major areas of disturbances this time are in Basirhat, Bangaon, Barasat sub division. Apparently it started with a derogatory Facebook post attacking Islam and its holy places. The identified culprit is a teenager, but whether he acted on his own or had any RSS links, is not clear.

Uttar Pradesh: Bhavan Nirman Mazdoor Sabha Holds its Third State Conference

THE third state conference of the Uttar Pradesh Bhavan Nirman Mazdoor Sabha was held in Lucknow on June 18. About 100 delegates attended the conference from Balia, Lucknow, Gajipur, Moradabad, Pilibhit, Allahabad, Fathepur, Chandoli, Gondia, Firozabad and Varanasi districts.

Debanjan Chakrabarti, general secretary of the Construction Workers Federation of India, hosted the CITU flag and garlanded the martyrs column.

The conference paid homage to the martyrs and departed leaders.

BJP Acts as Remote Control of IPFT’s Destructive Road Blockade Movement

WITH an eye on the Tripura Assembly election slated for early next year, parochial forces such as IPFT, an open political wing of the outlawed NLFT, have declared a destructive movement of indefinite blockade of the lone national highway and railway in the state from July 10 on the so-called demand of a separate state to be carved out of the existing Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC).

MAHARASHTRA: BUCTU Holds National Symposium on Alternative Education Policy

BOMBAY University and College Teachers’ Union (BUCTU) completed fifty years. A golden jubilee programme was held on June 17 at the University of Mumbai’s Kalina Campus in the newly constructed Green Technology Building Auditorium. To celebrate the golden jubilee, a seminar was organised on the topic “Towards Formulation of an Alternative Democratic Education Policy”.

KERALA: BJP Leader Arrested for Making Fake Currencies

IN an incident which rips apart the BJP’s stand on black money and fake currencies, a prominent BJP leader in Thrissur district has been arrested by Kerala Police, on June 22, for making fake currencies. Fake currencies of Rs 1.37 lakhs and materials for making fake currencies were also seized from the residence of Rakesh Erasseri, leader of BJP and Bhartiya Yuva Morcha in Mathilakam near Kodungallur. The seized materials are fake currency machines, ink, papers, colour printer and a computer. Rakesh’s brother Rajeev who is also an active BJP worker is now absconding.

HIMACHAL PRADESH: On the Results of Shimla Municipal Corporation

THE Shimla Municipal Corporation elections were held on June 16, 2017. The elections were delayed owing to large scale discrepancies in the voters list which led to a new schedule for the revision of electoral rolls. However, the HP High court ordered for an advance date without revision of the rolls with large scale anomalies left in the list. The result was declared on the 17th, in which 17 seats were won by the BJP, 12 by the Congress, 4 independents (Congress rebels - 3 and BJP rebel -1) and 1 CPI(M).
