TAMIL NADU: Launch of People’s Forum in Coimbatore City

SINCE 1986, Coimbatore city in the state of Tamil Nadu has been witnessing communal disturbances of varying degrees.  But, they involved neither rioting nor looting. After the demolition of Babri Masjid on December 6, 1992, violence erupted in the city.  Nevertheless, the situation was then contained without any further flare-up.  But, in November and December 1997, following the murder of a traffic policeman, the premier industrial city witnessed a communal conflagration unprecedented in its history.

TELANGANA: T Mas: A United Forum to Fight for Social Justice

THE forum of Telangana Mass and Social Organisations (T Mas) has given a call for holding meetings in every district of the state and forming committees at district, mandal and village levels.The T Mas forum was launched on July 4 with 271 social and mass organisations. The forum was an outcome of the ‘Mahajana Padayatra’ undertaken on the slogan of ‘Social Justice and Comprehensive Development’. It started at Ibrahimpatnam on October 17, 2016 and culminated on March 19, 2017, covering the entire state of Telangana.

PUDUCHERRY: Forum for Social Harmony Mobilises Against Communal Onslaught

THE environment of politics and culture is undergoing a major transformation in Indian society and its impact is reflected in Puducherry also. The minorities, the downtrodden and the working classes are continuously being threatened and getting affected. In this context, a Forum for Social Harmony-Puducherry  for uniting all the progressive mass organisations, trade unions, Confederation of government employees associations, civil society organisations, was launched in Puducherry.As a first step, the Forum organised a special seminar in July on ‘Challenges to Social Harmony’.

JHARKHAND: Convention on People’s Health Charter

A state-level convention to frame a People’s Health Charter was organised in Ranchi on August 27 under the banner of Jan Swasthya Abhiyan (JSA), Jharkhand. The convention unanimously adopted a 33-point People’s Health Charter and resolved to successfully pursue it and broaden the JSA in Jharkhand to strengthen the people’s health movement.The convention, inaugurated by CPI(M) Polit Bureau member Brinda Karat, was attended by 197 delegates, including 49 women, from 11 districts of Jharkhand.

WEST BENGAL: Big Capital Supporting Right Reactionaries

IMPLEMENTING the tenets of Marxism in concrete conditions is an essential task of a Marxist. CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury emphasised this point in two public meetings commemorating 200 years of Marx. The meetings took place in Sreerampore in Hooghly and Dum Dum in North 24 Parganas. Both the meetings drew huge crowds.In both the meetings, Yechury said, concrete decisions have to taken in concrete situations. We have to grasp Marxism and implement it in concrete situations.

ANDHRA PRADESH: Huge Rally in Visakhapatnam to Save Public Sector Companies

A HUGE rally was organised in Visakhapatnam on August 26 to protest the government’s move to privatise public sector undertakings. The CPI(M) city committee organised the rally from the railway station to the RTC Complex on the slogan: ‘Save Public Sector, Save Visakhapatnam and Nation’. Hundreds of people joined the rally which ended with a public meeting at the RTC Complex.Addressing the public meeting, CPI(M) Polit Bureau member B V Raghavulu said that privatisation of public sector companies was an anti-national act. The public sector units were built with the money of the nation.

TMC ‘Sweeps’ Democracy in Bengal

LOOK at some broad figures:On August 13, elections to seven municipalities including Durgapur Corporation took place in West Bengal.  There were 146 wards in total. TMC won four of them without contest. Out of the rest 142, TMC won 138 wards. In Durgapur, a traditional strong base of the Left and in Haldia, TMC won all the wards. They got 72 per cent votes in seven municipalities. TMC got 85 per cent votes in Haldia. In many wards of Haldia, Durgapur, Nalhati and Coopers’ Camp, TMC received over 90 per cent votes.  To a section of media, this is a ‘clean sweep’ by the TMC.

UTTAR PRADESH: Organised Murder of Children at Gorakhpur

DOZENS of children at the ward no. 100 of BRD Medical College hospital, Gorakhpur met their tragic death during the fatefull night of August 10-11 this year. This was not merely an accident. It was rather due to criminal negligence on the part of hospital administration, and systematic failure of the existing public health system prevalent in Uttar Pradesh.One Zahid Ali of village Bichhiya thus narrated the incident of his five year old daughter, Khushi. She ran high fever and was taken to a nearby doctor. Next day, the girl started vomiting and trembling.
