THE constitution of India is the foundational document that guides our country's polity. For every Indian citizen, the constitution secures justice, freedom of thought, expression, belief, worship and faith as well as equality of status. The constitution was the outcome of our national movement for independence from colonial rule that involved people from all strata of Indian society. It is a matter of great concern, however, that many of these constitutional guarantees available to Indian citizens are threatened in the recent period.

DELHI: DU Teachers March to Parliament

TEACHERS of Delhi University marched to Parliament Street on February 10, to draw attention to their demands related to their service conditions, including pensions, promotions, permanency in jobs and unwarranted recoveries from salaries. A key demand of the over two month long DUTA agitation is the one-time regulation for absorption of ad-hoc and temporary teachers which will allow the regularisation of the services of the thousands of temporary/ad-hoc teachers.

TRIPURA: Badal Chowdhury Released on Bail

AFTER spending 86 days in police and judicial custody as a victim of political vendetta of the BJP- IPFT government, Badal Chowdhury, CPI(M) Central Committee member and deputy leader of opposition in state legislative assembly, finally got bail on February 1. Justice Arindam Lodh of Tripura High Court granted him bail as the police failed to submit chargesheet against him even after almost three months.Badal Chowdhury was arrested in connection with a politically motivated false case of financial irregularities registered on October 13 last year.

Forty Lakh Join Anti-CAA Human Chains across Tamil Nadu

THE Tamil Nadu Platform for People's Unity (TNPPU) had organised a historic human chain programme across the state with a participation of over 40 lakh people from all sections of the society, protesting against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), National Population Register (NPR) and National Register of Citizens (NRC), on January 30.The TNPPU organised a convention on December 26 at Saidapet in Chennai, against CAA, NRC and NPR in which Prakash Karat, P Chidambaram, Kanimozhi, Thol Thirumavalavan, Professor Jawahirullah of MNMK and other leaders participated.

ODISHA: Big March against CAA-NRC-NPR in Bhubaneswar

ON January 30, the martyrdom day of Mahatma Gandhi, the state capital of Odisha witnessed an unprecedented march against CAA-NRC-NPR in response to a united call given by secular and progressive political outfits, social groups, academics, artists, students and youth under the banner of “We the People of India”. A peaceful gathering of more than 50,000 people solemnly reaffirmed their faith in the Constitution of India and took a pledge to uphold its all-inclusive principles and values at any cost.

DELHI: Court Issues Notice to Delhi Police on CPI(M) Complaint

WHILE hearing a plea by Brinda Karat, CPI(M) Polit Bureau member and K M Tewari, Delhi state secretary, the additional chief metropolitan magistrate Vishal Pahuja has directed the DCP, New Delhi on February 5, to submit a report on the non-filing of FIRs against BJP leaders Anurag Thakur and Parvesh Verma for delivering hate speeches in Delhi recently, during the campaign for the assembly elections.The court gave this direction after Karat had approached the court after her written complaints to the commissioner of police and the SHO, Parliament Street failed to elicit any response.  She an

Delhi: CPI(M) leaders address public meetings against CAA

LEADERS of the CPI(M) held a series of public meetings in Delhi against the Constitutional (Amendment) Act and the proposed National Population Register(NPR) and the National Register of Citizens(NRC).Sitaram Yechury, general secretary of the CPI(M) addressed public meetings in Khureji and Shaheen Bag, Delhi on January 25 and 26 respectively. Yechury said that the BJP is creating a dangerous situation in the country. The BJP is hell-bent on polarising the Indian people on communal lines and this is the prime reason that the CAA was brought in the country.
