ONE hundred and seventy-five years ago, Karl Marx and Fredrich Engels celebrated the publication of the Communist Manifesto on February 21, 1848 and then watched as Europe’s peoples rose up against one monarchical system after another. The text seemed to anticipate the Springtime of Nations, which included the attempt by the French people to redeem the promise of their 1789 Revolution, whose promise had been squashed by the restoration of the monarchy.

Dangerous Politics of Cow Vigilantism

The CPI(M) has strongly condemned the brutal killings of Junaid and Nasir and the dangerous politics of cow vigilantism promoted by right-wing groups in India. CPI(M) Polit Bureau member, Brinda Karat and Central Committee member, Amra Ram visited Ghatmika village in Rajasthan on February 18, to meet the families of the victims and express condolences and support for them. They criticised the lack of action by the state government and law enforcement agencies in bringing the perpetrators to justice.

Neoliberal-Hindutva Cocktail of Karnataka

KARNATAKA minister’s hate-speech that hit national headlines and the budget presented last week clearly brought forth the Karnataka BJP government’s dogged pursuit of neoliberal-Hindutva agenda. Minister for higher education C N Aswathnarayana in a rally in Mandya gave a call to ‘finish off’ Congress leader Siddaramaiah the way “Vokkaliga chieftains Uri Gowda and Nanje Gowda finished off Tipu Sultan”.According to recently revised history of Hindutva brigade, Tipu did not die fighting British, but was killed by Vokkaliga chieftains for betraying Mysore Wodeyars!

All India Conference of AIAWU Calls for Intensifying Struggles

THE 10th all India conference of AIAWU concluded successfully at Howrah in West Bengal with the slogan “reach out to people, build class unity and struggle for victory”. The conference elected a general council with 155 members. The general council in its first meeting elected A Vijayaraghavan as president and B Venkat as general secretary of the union.

Telangana: Struggle for Houses and House Sites Intensifies

THE struggle for houses and house sites for the poor is expanding and intensifying in Telangana since it began nine months ago in Jakkaloddi of Warangal Municipal Corporation. The struggle has spread to 23 districts now under the leadership of the Telangana Platform of Mass Organisations for Struggle. It is further expanding to some more districts. As many as 28,000 poor families have built huts in 47 centres on government lands, surplus lands and lands of outdated irrigation water tanks.

AP: New State Party Office in Vijayawada

THE new office building of the CPI(M) Andhra Pradesh state committee was inaugurated in Vijayawada on February 13. On the occasion, Party Polit Bureau member M A Baby said the new office would serve as a centre for building mass movements and public agitations and protests. It would be an active platform for democratic and progressive movements.Baby said the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was guided by the fascist Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and that the central government was hatching a plot to usurp the powers of states.

Karnataka Elections: Difficult Road for BJP

THE assembly elections in Karnataka are due this May. The schedule for elections is about to be announced and informally it is known that the elections will be held in the second week of May. Election process would be set in motion in March and the model code of conduct would set in by April beginning.  Karnataka assembly election has attracted national attention, this being the only state in southern India ruled by the BJP.  Karnataka has shown two long term political trends for the last four decades – it has never elected the same party consecutively in assembly elections.

AIAWU All India Conference Begins in Howrah

THE 10th all India conference of the All India Agricultural Workers Union (AIAWU) began on February 15, at Sarat Sadan, Jyoti Basu Nagar (Howrah) in West Bengal. Amidst slogans of ‘Inquilab Zindabad’, AIAWU president A Vijayaraghavan hoisted the union’s flag. Before the flag hoisting, five torch-marches reached the venue and handed over the martyrs’ torches to the all India leadership of the union and to the reception committee of the conference.

Assam: Asom Krishi Shramik Union Holds First State Conference

THE first state conference of the Asom Krishi Shramik Union, the Assam state unit of the All India Agricultural Workers Union (AIAWU) was held successfully on January 31, 2023 in Rangia of Kamrup rural district. Senior leader and former MP, Uddhab Barman hoisted the flag of the union, followed by paying floral tributes to the martyrs column.Vikram Singh, joint secretary of the AIAWU inaugurating the conference discussed the sorry state of employment in rural India. AIAWU will continue to fight for a central legislation for rural workers and for pension to rural labourers.
