TN: Massive Response to CPI(M) Picket Call

MORE than a lakh people, including youth and women in Tamil Nadu, responded to the nationwide picket call given by the CPI(M) Central Committee, to protest the skyrocketing prices of essential commodities and growing unemployment.On September 7, they gathered in large numbers and raised their voices against the disastrous economic policies of the BJP government, which have been affecting the livelihood of the people over the last nine years.

Maha: SKM Formation Convention Held in Mumbai

THE formation convention of the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM) in Maharashtra was enthusiastically held on September 5, 2023 at the Yashwantrao Chavan Centre near Mantralaya (secretariat) in the heart of South Mumbai. It mobilised over 1,000 selected peasant activists from all over the state. They belonged to several different organisations, of which 13 were the main ones. They included a large number of women and adivasi peasants.Seven central leaders of the SKM addressed the convention.

Apple Growers Raise Concerns over Suspension of Market Intervention Scheme

IN a memorandum to the lieutenant governor of Jammu & Kashmir, Srinagar, sent on September 13, the Apple Farmers’ Federation of India (AFFI), underlined the calamity that awaits the apple growers of Jammu & Kashmir this marketing season due to the suspension of the Market Intervention Scheme (MIS) by the union government. The MIS played an important role in procuring inferior quality C-grade apples in the Valley since 2017, when the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India (NAFED) first launched the scheme.

WB: Massive Gathering amid Rain in Kolkata for Martyrs’ Day Meet

MARTYRS ' Day was observed in Kolkata on August 31, in memory of the martyrs of the 1959 food movement that had culminated into a rally of thousands of hunger marchers who went to Esplanade, Kolkata, on August 31 to demand adequate food for all and were brutally lathi-charged by the police without any warning and without any provocation whatsoever, leaving 80 dead.Since then, August 31 has been observed as Martyrs Day on a massive scale every year.  The Left Front announced a meeting on August 31 this year at Esplanade in memory of the martyrs.
