CPI(M) Memo to President on Assam Governor’s Communal Remarks
Below we reproduce the memorandum sent by Deben Bhattacharya, Assam state secretary of the Communist Party of India(Marxist), to the President of India on December 6, on the communal remarks of the governor of Assam.
THE Assam State Committee of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) would like to draw your kind attention to the unwarranted and blatantly communal role of the governor of Assam, Padmanabh Balakrishna Acharya, and solicits your immediate intervention on the matter.
It is a matter of grave concern that governor P B Acharya has been misusing his constitutional position since he took oath of office as the acting governor in December, 2014. It is really disturbing that all the canons of propriety are being thrown to winds by the incumbent governor.
The CPI(M) has reasons to believe that the governor has unflinching faith in the philosophy and communal politics of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh(RSS).
He has, time and again, been making not only controversial and irresponsible statements, but also unleashing venomous hate campaign against the Muslim community. Acting governor Acharya's public utterances are quite unbecoming of a person holding the prestigious constitutional post.
What is shocking is, recently on November 21, the governor has reportedly stated that 'Hindustan is only for Hindus'. His subsequent clarification saying 'Muslims are free to go to Pakistan or anywhere' exposes his communal mindset and strong allegiance to the RSS. Such brazenly communal campaigns are designed to vitiate the atmosphere and disturb peace and communal harmony in Assam. The governor has failed to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution and continues to behave in a manner not consistent with the true spirit of the Constitution.
It is also a matter of serious concern that the BJP-led central government has appointed such a person with communally polluted mindset only to denigrate the prestigious constitutional post. In Assam, no permanent governor has been appointed since long and Acharya has been officiating as the acting governor.
Under the circumstances, the Assam state committee of the CPI(M) solicits your immediate intervention in this regard.
The CPI(M) demands that the acting governor of Assam P B Acharya be removed from his post immediately and a person with integrity and probity, impartiality and dignity be appointed as a permanent governor who has unquestionable allegiance to the Constitution of India.
