Bihar: Inept Government in Inertia

THE Supreme Court had severely indicted the Bihar government and the state administration in the sexual exploitation of minor girls in Muzaffarpur shelter home case and recent death of more than 200 children due to acute encephalitis syndrome.The situation in the state has further worsened due to devastating floods inundating the entire north Bihar. The people require immediate help but government has totally failed in its responsibility, though the NDRF and SDRF have earned respect of flood victims owing to their commendable work in flood relief.

Nitish Govt’s Report Card: Claims & Reality

THE Bihar government led by Nitish Kumar has brought out a report card on its performance after the completion of one year in office in November. It boasts of implementation of 35 per cent reservation for women in all state government jobs, enforcement of total prohibition, beginning of work on the Kachi Dargah-Bidupur six-lane bridge on the Ganges and conducting free and fair matriculation examinations.

TOTAL prohibition declared by the Bihar government and the resultant bootlegging have occupied much of the space of daily newspapers in the state. The legislation enacted by the government to enforce the prohibition has been criticised for some of its provisions that are harsh, including the one to penalise all members of a family and the entire village if liquor is found in a family or is brewed in a village illegally.The prohibition has gained wide support among the people in general and the women folk in particular and its positive impact can be seen in the lives of daily wage earners.

The Polit Bureau of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has issued the following statement on August 26. THE Polit Bureau of the CPI(M) expresses its concern at the devastation caused by the severe flooding of the river Ganga in the state of Bihar. The PB expresses grief at the immense loss of lives and property. As of now 135 people have been killed and 35 lakh affected in 12 districts in the state. The Polit Bureau urges upon the Bihar state government to organise the provision of immediate relief and adequate compensation for those who have lost virtually everything.
