AIDWA Holds Ten-day March for Liquor-free Tamil Nadu

THE state of Tamil Nadu stands first as far as the revenue from sale of liquor is concerned. Even during the festival of Deepavali, the state government fixed a target for sale of liquor through the state owned TASMAC shops and ‘achieved’ it. Alcoholism is prevalent even among school students and the number of young widows is increasing in the state. The fact that in many instances of violence, whether it is domestic violence or sexual violence, the culprits were found to be drunk proves the connection between violence and high consumption of liquor.

VIP Rapists Patronised by the BJP Regime

EVEN as India can lay claim to having more progressive and comprehensive laws against sexual assault than many other countries, the subversion of these laws by VIP rapists with the patronage of governments, police and sadly even a section of the judiciary, raise serious questions regarding the denial of justice for victims of sexual assault. The case against Chinmayanand a three time MP of the BJP and a former union minister and “guru” to many leading the present UP regime is the most recent example. The details of the case are well known and need not be repeated here.

On Triple Talaq Bill

Below we publish the statement of AIDWA issued on August 31THE passing of the draconian Triple Talaq Bill which criminalises the mere pronouncement of triple talaq and makes it an offence punishable with upto three years of imprisonment is wrong and condemnable. As we had pointed out earlier, the bill converts a civil wrong, which all matters pertaining to family law are, into a criminal offence and is both ill conceived and legally flawed. It is communal in its intent as it specially seeks to target Muslim men who desert their wives and punish them.

Uphold Women’s Rights: AIDWA

THIS period has been a very challenging time for all the progressive, democratic and secular forces in the country. The results of the 17th Lok Sabha elections have been a great setback. The BJP aroused nationalist jingoism, zeroing in on Pulwama and Balakot, and shifted the poll narrative from the burning issues of the people. The consolidation of the Hindutva vote bank through communally charged campaigns and violent attacks strengthened communal polarisation and helped the BJP.
