AIDWA Welcomes SC Judgement on Abortion Rights

THE All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA), in a statement issued on October 1, has welcomed the judgment in which the Supreme Court held that unmarried women have the right to access safe and legal abortions between twenty and twenty-four weeks of pregnancy, if they face a change in their material circumstances, similar to married women.

Withdraw Anti-Women Decision by Indian Bank: AIDWA

ALL India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA) in a press note issued on June 15 strongly condemned the decision of the Indian Bank not to appoint selected women candidates who are six or more months pregnant. AIDWA said: “This anti-women decision by the Indian Bank is similar to the one taken by the State Bank of India some months ago. The SBI had to withdraw their decision due to huge protests from various quarters.”

Amendment of Age of Marriage: Women’s Organisations Express Concern

NATIONAL women’s organisations – All India Democratic Women’s Association, National Federation of Indian Women, All India Progressive Women’s Association, Pragatisheel Mahila Sangathan, and the All India Mahila Sanskritik Sangathan – sent a memorandum to Vinay Sahasrabuddhe, chairperson, Parliamentary Standing Committee, on May 17 regarding the Proposed Amendment of Age of Marriage 2021.The women’s organisations expressed deep concern about the implications of the proposed amendment of age of marriage for women from 18 to 21.

Rising Attacks On Women In West Bengal: Women’s Organisations Write to NCW

A JOINT memorandum was submitted on March 7, 2022, to the chairperson of the National Commission for Women, Rekha Sharma by three women’s organisations – AIDWA, NFIW and AIPWA. This memorandum was in connection to the violence unleashed by the TMC government in West Bengal against women during the recent period.The three women’s organisations stated: “Women are facing an extremely insecure atmosphere with a threat to their lives and well being in West Bengal. AIDWA Supports the Struggle of Anganwadis

THE All India Democratic Women's Association (AIDWA), in a statement issued on February 23, has expressed strong support to the struggle of Anganwadi workers and helpers going on in Haryana and Delhi for the last two months. It demands that the struggling workers’ demands be immediately accepted by the concerned state governments. The Anganwadi workers and helpers in Haryana are on strike since December 8, 2021. Thousands of them are in a day and night continuous dharna in Karnal which is the assembly constituency of the chief minister.

Protect the Right to Education of Muslim Girls

THE All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA), in a statement issued on February 9, has strongly condemned the failure of the Karnataka state government to protect the rights of Muslim girl students. It is unacceptable that these students are being denied their right to education because of wearing the hijab, it said.It is shocking that the state government has irresponsibly stood by watching the issue spiral in the state without intervening proactively to fulfill its constitutional duty to protect the right to education of Muslim girls.

AIDWA Demands Withdrawal of anti-Women SBI Guidelines

THE AIDWA has strongly criticised the recent circular of the State Bank of India regarding the appointment of pregnant women in the bank. The instructions issued by the bank regarding the appointment of pregnant women - as to women who are pregnant three months and above, will not be appointed. They will be appointed only after three months of delivery.

Withdraw FIRs against Journalists: AIDWA

THE All India Democratic Women Association (AIDWA), in a statement issued on November 16, expressed solidarity with journalists Samriddhi K Sakunia and Swarna Jha. They were first detained in Assam and then taken to Tripura and arrested. Both the women journalists had gone to cover communal violence in the Tripura. It has been reported in the media that they were detained for their social media posts about the communal violence. Two FIRs have been filed against them. The journalists have now been released on bail.
