Three Years since the Communal Violence in North East Delhi

ON February 26, 2023, a programme was organised on the topic 'Three Years of North-East Delhi Communal Violence' at the Quami Ekta Bhawan of Major Jaipal Singh Trust in North East Delhi. Around 110 people took part in this programme. Indumati started the programme by reciting a poem.

A large number of people from the families affected by the violence participated. Among the affected, Malika, Aagaz, Ramsugarath and Rehana narrated their harrowing experiences. All of them had one thing to say that neither justice was served nor adequate compensation. Rehana said due to fear, she couldn’t file an FIR till date from her side. Ramsugarath shuddered at the thought of his son dying in his arms. He couldn’t get justice till date as the issue of compensation is pending in the court. Dr Sherwani, who treated the victims of communal violence and cooperated with the CPI(M) in the relief work, also spoke. Many from the area appreciated the role played by the CPI(M) Delhi state committee and especially its Polit Bureau member Brinda Karat. All in all, everyone appreciated the CPI(M)'s immediate relief and solidarity efforts after the violence. Along with this, only one thing emerged from all of them that even after three years, the affected people have neither got justice nor adequate compensation. The Delhi Police is under the Modi government at the centre. Delhi Police remains the biggest obstacle in the way of getting justice. On the other hand, the Aam Aadmi Party government of Delhi is insensitive in the matter of compensation.

Addressing the gathering, Brinda Karat emphasised the need for a joint struggle for ensuring justice and adequate compensation. She said the paltry amounts announced for compensation, of only Rs 5 lakh for a minor child, and Rs 10 lakhs to the families of the deceased, cannot be called adequate in any way. The struggle for justice and compensation has to be taken forward in a planned manner. Struggle for justice is necessary to usher in Quami Ekta. She called upon people present there to be part of this struggle. CPI(M) Delhi state secretary, KM Tiwari and secretariat member Sehba Farooqui also addressed the meeting. The programme was conducted by secretariat member Rajeev Kunwar.

At the end of the programme, scholarships were distributed to 63 children of the affected families to continue their studies.
