Telangana: AIAWU State Conference Begins with a Huge Public Meeting
THE third state conference of the All India Agricultural Workers’ Union was held from December 29-31, 2022 at Khammam. More than six hundred delegates from all corners of the Telangana state attended the conference.
On December 29, a huge public meeting was organised at SR & BGNR College grounds, Khammam town. More than one lakh people attended the public meeting and made it a huge, huge success. This has been the largest gathering in this ground.
Thirty thousand people in red shirts, and red sarees marched in the streets of Khammam and painted the whole town red. People in the streets and from house tops enthusiastically greeted the marching red shirt volunteers.
Pinarayi Vijayan, chief minister of Kerala was the chief guest for the public meeting. He spoke on various issues in his hour-long speech and enthused the people who attended the public meeting. People listened to him with rapt attention. He lauded the efforts of the All India Agricultural Workers’ Union in bringing acts that benefit the unorganised sector in agriculture. He appreciated the various struggles led by AIAWU all over the country in general and Telangana in particular, in the past and in the present. He mentioned Telangana Armed Peasant Struggle, Tebhaga movement and Jakkaloddi housing struggle in Warangal district and peasant struggle in Mudigonda and offered his rich tributes to those who sacrificed their lives to the cause of struggles. He also told the audience how Kerala has been in the forefront in implementing various welfare measures to the poor and the needy including agricultural workers.
Lashing at the NDA government at the centre for its anti-people and pro-corporate policies, Vijayan said, “Modi’s government is tearing apart the very fabric of federalism, secularism and socialism, the essential features of our constitution”. He also said, “On one side, it is providing lakhs of crores to the corporates in the form of tax-waivers; on the other side, it is, day by day, bringing draconian laws like labour codes, farm laws in order to drive people away from agriculture”.
Tammineni Veerabhadram, CPI(M) Telangana state secretary and B Venkat, president of AIAWU also addressed the huge gathering.
The delegates to the conference discussed various issues threadbare in the following days and adopted various resolutions and future course of action for the movement.
