CONTINUING the winning spree since the elections for local bodies in December 2020 and for the assembly in April 2021, the LDF has gained victory in the by-elections for local bodies. These elections were necessitated due to various reasons like resignation of members after they were elected as members of legislative assembly and so on. These results show that the mass base of the LDF has strengthened after the assembly elections held exactly seven months back. LDF has won 17 seats out of 32 and three among these have been wrested from the UDF. UDF managed to win in 13 and BJP got just one seat with a majority of one vote. LDF candidates won all three district panchayat wards in Alappuzha, Palakkad and Kozhikode. In Aroor division of Alappuzha district panchayat, Ananthu Rameshan, CPI(M) won with a huge margin of 10,063 votes. Daleem Joju, currently an MLA from Aroor assembly constituency won this division in 2020 with a margin of 3,495 votes. 

In Srikrishnapuram division Palakkad district panchayath, CPI(M) candidate K Sridharan emerged victorious with a thumping margin of 9,270 votes. This election was necessitated as K Prem Kumar resigned after he was elected to the assembly from Ottappalam constituency. Sridharan won with an increased majority of more than 2000 votes. 

In Nanminda division of Kozhikode district panchayat, Razia Thottayi of CPI(M) won with a margin of 6,766 votes. The election was necessitated when Jameela Kanathil got elected to the assembly from Koyilandi assembly constituency. 

LDF candidates Clynus Rosario and Bindu Sivan have won in respective divisions in Thiruvananthapuram and Kochi corporations respectively. Both CPI(M) candidates won with an increased majority of votes. LDF retained all four bloc panchayat divisions in Chirayinkeezh and Pothankod in Thiruvananthapuram, Mathilakam block in Thrissur and Chunkamandam division in Palakkad.

UDF has lost one gram panchayat seat each in Thiruvananthapuram, Palakkad and Kottayam. Elections for three municipal wards also took place. CPI(M) retained a ward in Piravam municipality while Congress retained wards in Kanjangad and Iringalakkuda.
