COMMUNAL MURDER OF MOHSIN SHEIKH UNDER the pretext of protesting against a claimed Facebook posting insulting the revered historical figure of Maharashtra, Chhatrapati Shivaji, as well as the late Shiv Sena leader Bal Thackeray, criminals belonging to the Hindutva Parivar went on assaulting members of the Muslim community and destroying property in Pune and some other cities of Maharashtra for several days recently. As a part of this violent campaign, Mohsin Sheikh, a 29-year youth working in an IT company was bludgeoned to death on June 2 by armed rightwing criminals roaming the streets of Pune. The only earning member of his family, Mohsin Sheikh, was murdered for no other reason than that of being a bearded Muslim youth! After murdering him, the members of the Hindu Rashtra Sena exchanged SMSs that said, “One wicket has fallen.” The culture of cruelty of the Hindutva forces was expressed once again in all its diabolism. The shocking murder was ignored by the media for two days. The news of the murder came to light only by late evening on June 4. STATE CPI(M)’S INTERVENTION On June 5, CPI(M) state secretary and Central Committee member Dr Ashok Dhawale immediately issued a press statement denouncing the dastardly communal murder of Mohsin Sheikh by criminals of the Hindu Rashtra Sena. The statement said: “With the ascension to power of the BJP-led Narendra Modi government at the centre, communal and criminal hotheads all over the country have come to believe that they can attack the minorities and violate law and order with impunity. In Maharashtra, such heinous incidents as the murder of Mohsin Sheikh are being perpetrated precisely to create communal polarisation in view of the state assembly elections that are due later this year in October. “The CPI(M) Maharashtra state committee strongly denounces the dastardly communal murder of Mohsin Sheikh by goons of the Hindu Rashtra Sena. It demands that all those connected with this grave crime be arrested forthwith and be stringently tried and speedily punished in fast track courts. It demands that the state government immediately give a substantial compensation to the family of the victim. The CPI(M) also demands that the state government crack down on communal elements with a heavy hand. “The CPI(M) Maharashtra state committee calls upon all Left, democratic and secular forces in the state to come together on the streets to oppose this communal offensive and to preserve secularism and communal amity.” On the morning of June 6, a CPI(M) state delegation comprising Dr Ashok Dhawale, Central Committee member and former MLA Narsayya Adam and state secretariat member and sitting MLA Rajaram Ozare met the state’s home minister R R Patil in his cabin in Mantralaya and submitted a memorandum that made the above demands. The delegation also raised another burning issue --- the rising atrocities on dalits in the state and demanded equally stringent and speedy action against the perpetrators, along with proper compensation to the families of the victims. The state’s home minister explained that urgent steps were being taken by the state government on both these issues, most of the criminals responsible had already been arrested, and adequate compensation had been or would be given to the families of the victims. He assured the delegation that the state government would be proactive in these cases. On the morning of June 6, almost the entire Solapur district committee of the CPI(M), led by M H Shaikh, CPI(M) state committee member and state convenor of the Minorities Rights Struggle Committee, visited the family of Mohsin Sheikh at Solapur and expressed their deep sympathy at the great loss which it had sustained. The bereaved family said that it did not want any money; it wanted justice. The CPI(M) immediately met the Solapur district collector too in this regard. MUMBAI: PROTEST DEMO BY MASS ORGANISATIONS Upon hearing the news of Mohsin Sheikh’s murder, office bearers of the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) and several other mass organisations decided to organise a protest demonstration next evening at Azad Maidan in the state capital, Mumbai. Azad Maidan happens to be the only open spot in Mumbai where authorities allow demonstrations and public gatherings. But when the DYFI activists met police authorities on June 5 morning to inform them of the planned protest programme, the officers refused even to accept the intimation letter. DYFI leaders were abused and warned against holding the programme!  In the evening, dozens of police personnel were stationed at Azad Maidan threatening to arrest the organisers if the demonstration was held. But the police plans to thwart the programme failed as protesters gathered in large numbers. Hundreds of activists assembled at Azad Maidan on June 5 evening, defying the intimidation by the Mumbai Police, and held a protest demonstration against the brutal murder of Mohsin Sheikh by rightwing Hindutva forces. The protest programme was organised jointly by the DYFI, SFI, AIDWA, All India Secular Forum and magazine Communalism Combat. Dr Irfan Engineer of the All India Secular Forum, Javed Anand of Communalism Combat, CPI(M) state secretariat member and Mumbai district secretary Mahendra Singh, SFI Maharashtra president Mohan Jadhav, DYFI state secretary Preety Sekhar, Salim Alwari, Dr Azimuddin and Ashok Pawar spoke at the meeting. All the speakers flayed the police for its attempt to thwart the protest programme. On the one hand, fascist criminals encouraged by the BJP’s ascendancy to central government are feeling free to roam the towns of Maharashtra, intimidating, assaulting and murdering the innocent people. On the other hand, even Azad Maidan is being sought to be made out of bounds for secular activists to hold a peaceful gathering. INFAMOUS RECORD OF M’RASHTRA POLICE The Maharashtra Police has an infamous record of open partisanship towards the rightwing Hindutva forces. The participation of uniformed police personnel in last year’s Dhule riots is well-known. Persecution of Shaheen Dhada and Rinu Srinivasan of Palghar jointly by the police and Shiv Sena goons last year for a Facebook remark is another incident that came to light recently. In another shameful episode last year, the police machinery and the Shiv Sena joined hands to intimidate Smt Pushpa Bhave, well known intellectual, who had protested against the decision to give the name of Bal Thackeray to the stage of the Akhil Bharatiya Marathi Sahitya Sammelan session at Chiplun. In response to her statement rightly opposing the Sahitya Sammelan’s decision, Shiv Sena leaders had publicly threatened her and ‘prohibited’ her from going to the Konkan region. Aligning themselves shamelessly with the Shiv Sena, police authorities in Chiplun cancelled a symposium which they had decided to hold in Chiplun in which Smt Pushpa Bhave was one of the panelists invited to speak. What is more, the police went on to issue orders asking Smt Bhave not to enter Konkan! Cases of the nexus of Hindutva goons and the police in Maharashtra are innumerable. It is well known that the Justice Srikrishna commission report had pointed out the nexus between sections of the police and communal forces in the December 1992-January 1993 anti-Muslim pogrom in Mumbai. Non-implementation of the Srikrishna commission report by successive Congress-NCP governments is a telling instance of the character of these ruling parties too. This gives legitimacy to the majoritarian communal discourse and violent intimidation of minorities. The speakers at the Azad Maidan protest demonstration raised all the above issues and called upon all the secular forces to unite against the threat of semi-fascism in Maharashtra. Mahendra Singh pointed out that organisations like the Hindu Rashtra Sena are feeling emboldened with the Narendra Modi government assuming office at the centre. The Pune murder, he said, is part of a larger project to destroy the secular democratic nature of our society. All the speakers demanded prompt prosecution of Mohsin Sheikh’s murderers that would lead to definite conviction. The protesters also demanded that the government must provide financial support to the family of Mohsin who was the only earning member of his family. The organisations which came together to hold the demonstration have decided to conduct protest programmes in Pune and other parts of Maharashtra to force the government to act firmly against the semi-fascist forces that are perpetrating violence in the state.
