Haryana: Kisan state conference Resolves to unleash Movement

Sumit Singh

THE 13th state conference of the AIKS Haryana state was held on March 7-8 at Jind. On March 7th a public meeting was held which was attended by a large number of kisans. Because of hail and heavy downpour the venue of the rally had to be changed. The space of the public meeting fell short and a large number of people had to stand in outside the venue. The public meeting was addressed by Ashok Dhawale, Amra Ram, Inderjit, Phul Singh and Harpal Singh.

Ashok Dhawale spoke in length about the present condition of the kisans in the country. He said Modi during the election campaign held 440 public meetings and had promised to waive off the debt that the kisans of the country are facing. However, Dhawale said after assuming office he has given concession of Rs 40,000 crore to the corporates instead of giving any relief to the peasants. He said the AIKS demands implementation of the Swaminathan Commission recommendations which are essential to improve the condition of the kisans. Speaking about the Modi’s model of helping the kisans by promulgating insurance of crops, Ashok Dhawale pointed out that the insurance scheme has actually helped the insurance companies and not the kisans.
The conference was inaugurated by P Krishnaprasad. He focused on the remunerative prices for the kisans and said that the peasants do not get adequate price for their crops. Asking the kisan delegates to visit every village and disseminate this information that building of the movements can only protect them from the anti-kisan policies.

The report of the activities for three years was placed by the general secretary of the Haryana Kisan Sabha. The report critically highlighted the weaknesses but also pointed out at the growth and development of some of the movements of the peasantry in the state. The struggles for compensation of land after it got acquired, struggle for remunerative prices etc., and were some of the important struggles in the recent period.

Various resolutions were also adopted. The report was thoroughly discussed and a list of future tasks was enumerated. These tasks include: a strong kisan movement to be developed and at while touching at the rural base building a strong worker peasant unity was the focus. Strengthening a team at the state centre; activating the tehsil and block committees; generating resources for the organisation and the movement; getting young kisans in the committees; apart from the regular tasks, issues of social reform to be taken up, were some of the other tasks endorsed in the conference.

Later a 31 member state committee was elected unanimously with Phul Singh Sheokhand as president and Harpal Singh as the general secretary. Dharamvir was elected as treasurer.

Harpal Singh while concluding the conference placed the future tasks. On March 13 demand pertaining to compensation due to hail and rain will be raised in all the district and tehsil headquarters. A sum of Rs 5,500 was collected for the Delhi riot victims in the conference.
