Kerala Paves Way, Passes Resolution against CAA

N S Sajith

IN a united move against the divisive agenda of the RSS backed central government, the Kerala legislative assembly became the first state legislative body to pass a resolution against Citizenship (Amendment) Act. A resolution passed in a special session of Kerala legislative assembly demanded the repeal of CAA. In a concluding remark after a detailed discussion, chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan said that the central government should scrap the bill through an ordinance, considering the concerns of the people of India. He also ensured the assembly that there will not be any detention centres in Kerala.
The resolution moved by Pinarayi Vijayan was supported by members from ruling LDF and opposition UDF as well. The lone dissent voice came from BJP legislator, O Rajagopal. After the voice vote, speaker Sreeramakrishnan announced that the bill has been passed. The resolution expressed deep concern about the fear and anxiety among the people since the bill was passed by both houses of parliament. The Act contradicts the basic tenets and principles of Indian constitution. Kerala witnessed peaceful demonstrations against CAA.
CAA is against fundamental values of equality. Independence movement in the country was a confluence of various streams. Indian constitution was evolved with modern democratic values and secular outlook which was a product of freedom movement, the resolution said.
In a scathing attack against the Sangh Parivar, Pinarayi Vijayan said that RSS had adopted the ideology of Hitler. Their organisational structure is similar to that of Mussolini’s. The BJP is now trying to establish the agenda of RSS which views Muslims, a major chunk of population, as internal threats. The same agenda is unmasked in the citizenship issue. He urged the people to rally to protect secularism. Moves to exclude a particular section was explicit in issues like triple talaq and in the abrogation of Article 370.
Special privileges are enjoyed by 13 states in the country. But the privileges for Jammu and Kashmir alone were scrapped. We can see the discrimination on every issue, he added.
