THE real culprit in a political murder case has been nabbed by the Kerala Police after a long span of 25 years, exposing the clandestine operations of the police during the UDF government headed by Congress leader late K Karunakaran. Eleven CPI(M) workers and one dissident Congress worker were arrested and jailed in the killing of RSS worker Sunil Kumar on December 4, 1994. The main motive behind the arrests was political vendetta of the Congress. The innocence of CPI(M) workers who were arrested and jailed in the case fabricated by the police has also been established with the arrest of the real culprit, Moyinuddin, on October 12. Moyinuddin is a worker of Jam Iyyathul Husania, an Islamic terror group.

 

Sunil was hacked to death by armed criminals at his home near Thozhiyoor, a coastal hamlet in Thrissur district. His mother Kunjimu and brother were also attacked. His neighbours Biji, Baburaj and Rafeeq rushed to Sunil’s home to help the injured. But the police reached the site and took these CPI(M) workers to custody and unleashed severe torture in custody. To save themselves from the third-degree torture they had to “confess”. Jaison, a dissident Congress worker, also was found guilty along with these 11 CPI(M) workers. In 1997, a Kerala court released all the accused after a report of the police citing that Islamic terror elements were involved in several murders in the coastal villages of Thrissur. The CPI(M) workers had submitted the content of the report to the High Court. While releasing all accused in this case, the High Court suggested the government that a reinvestigation may be done in this case. 

 

Three accused in the case died due to custodial torture. The CPI(M) workers have undergone mental agony too. They met Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and requested for a reinvestigation. The crime branch team took charge and investigations have been made to nab the real culprits. Biji and Baburaj, who were falsely accused in the case, said that CPI(M) stood along with us in the entire process of trial.
