THE CPI(M) and the Left parties held protests in the streets against the atrocities in Bhangar, where two villagers were killed in police firing. As the ruling party and police have forcefully entered the villages and are threatening them, the Left parties mobilised people throughout the state in solidarity with the struggling people of Bhangar.

Hundreds of CPI(M) activists held a wildcat demonstration in front of  Bengal Global Business Summit venue in Milan Mela in Kolkata. They shouted against police atrocities in Bhangar and blocked road for a while. There was scuffle with police and more than 130 activists were arrested from the spot. Left legislative leader Sujan Chakrabarty, CPI(M) leaders  Manab Mukherjee, Kanti Ganguly, Rahul Ghosh, Anadi Sahoo, SFI leader Madhuja Senroy were among those arrested. They were taken to Kolkata police headquarters in Lalbazar and were put in lock up. They were not freed, neither the arrested activists sought personal bail bonds. They stayed throughout the night in police lock up. They were produced in the court only on the next day. As they were brought into court, a large number of Party workers demonstrated outside the city's Alipore court. The court released them without any conditions and rejected police case.

Meanwhile, protest rallies were held throughout the state protesting arrests. CPI(M) state secretary Surjyakanta Mishra dubbed the arrests as “brutal arrests and repression” and said that such actions “can’t deter our comrades from raising people’s issues. We will continue to fight this undemocratic and anti-people regime.”

On January 25, intellectuals, lawyers, artists and professionals from different walks of life gathered at Alipur, where South 24 Parganas district headquarters is located, to protest against police firing in Bhangar.

CPI(M) state secretary Surjyakanta Mishra addressed large peasant gatherings in districts, in connection with the AIKS district level conferences, and asserted that the state would witness more and more ‘Bhangars’ in the coming days. People in villages are fuming with discontent as the peasants are not getting fair prices, lands are being grabbed by mafia, panchayats have become centres of corruption. People will come out in larger numbers against the corrupt and authoritarian TMC regime in the near future.
