TRIPURA: Left Front Sweeps Panchayat By-poll Elections

Rahul Sinha

THE Left Front in Tripura has achieved a sweeping victory in the by-elections held for the vacant seats in the three tier panchayat held on December 21. 83 percent of the voters cast their vote in a peaceful manner. Of the total 47 seats, Left Front won unopposed in three seats in gram panchayat. Votes were taken for one seat of zila parishad, two seats of panchayat samiti and 41 seats of gram panchayat.

As the results were declared on December 23, it became evident that the people in the rural area have reposed their faith in the Left Front. In the seat number 1 of Unakoti zila parishad, CPI(M) candidate Harekrishna Majumdar defeated  BJP's Laxmirani Sarkar by a margin of 320 votes. TMC lost its deposit here.

Likewise CPI(M) won the seat number 7 of Gaurnagar panchayat samiti of Unakoti and seat number 6 of Durga Chowmohoni panchayat samiti of Dhalai.

Out of the 41 seats of gram panchayat, Left Front won in 37, while TMC and BJP could win two seats each. Out of the total 47 seats the Left Front has won in 43 and has succeeded in wresting five seats from the opposition. Out of the 40 seats of gram panchayat won by the Left Front, CPI(M) won in 38, CPI won in two.

The Tripura Left Front Committee in a statement has congratulated the voters and expressed gratitude for reposing their faith in the Left Front. The voters in general have voted positively in favour of the Left Front and the Left Front government. This is a mandate for peace, harmony and development.  However, it noted with concern that in a number of seats, the Congress party had a clandestine understanding with the BJP where they did not even contest the seats they had won previously. However they ended up winning not a single seat.
