Cauvery Dispute: Eschew Violence, Maintain Normalcy
The Polit Bureau of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has issued the following statement September 13, 2016.
THE Polit Bureau of the CPI(M) is shocked and dismayed at the reports of violence and arson in Karnataka and some parts of Tamil Nadu.
The Polit Bureau appeals to the people of both the states to maintain calm over the Supreme Court decision on the sharing of Cauvery river waters. The Polit Bureau calls upon the state governments of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu to ensure the protection of people’s lives and properties.
The dispute over sharing of the Cauvery river waters is a longstanding dispute between the states of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. Such disputes can only be resolved through negotiations and a mutual agreement on how these waters are to be shared. Such disputes cannot be resolved by whipping up passions amongst the people of both the states and pitting them against each other.
In the case filed by the Tamil Nadu government to implement the Tribunal award on the Cauvery water issue, the Supreme Court has ordered to release 15000 cu.ft/sec of water for ten days on daily basis. In spite of reservations, the Karnataka state government has released water.
The Polit Bureau of the CPI(M) urges upon all concerned, the central government and the state governments, to ensure that the water sharing disputes be resolved through negotiations and mutual agreement.
