IN a statement issued on May 30, the Centre of Indian Trade Unions has congratulated the working class of India for the successful observance of the ‘Action Day against Attacks on the Life and Livelihood of People’, on its foundation day on May 30, 2015. Thousands of workers belonging to various sectors came together at district headquarters, held rallies, demonstrations, dharnas, road blocks etc throughout the country. In Kerala, siege of district collectorate was held in different districts. Thousands of workers participated. Tapan Sen, general secretary of the CITU inaugurated the programme in Thiruvananthapuram. A K Padmanabhan, president, CITU, addressed workers’ rallies in Hyderabad as well as in Warangal. The programme was the culmination of a month long campaign starting on May Day, against the anti-people, anti-worker policies of the Modi led NDA government. On May 26, 2015, in nearly four thousand places all over the country, workers burnt the effigy of the anti-people government and held demonstrations. The campaign and the action day was observed on the following issues  Against the attacks on workers’ rights and retrograde amendments in labour laws.  Against the government’s moves to do away with EPF, EPS and ESI; diversion of PF money for investment in share market; attempts to appropriate it for other purposes.  Against mass scale contractorisation and for same wage for the contract workers as regular workers.  For a minimum wage at not less than Rs 15,000.  For statutory minimum wage for the Scheme workers pending their regularisation.  Against the sharp reduction of social sector expenditure; drastic curtailment of expenditure on ICDS, Mid day meal programme and NRHM etc.  Against aggressive pursuit of privatisation of PSUs, denationalisation of coal, handing over of our natural resources, public utility services and infrastructure to corporate.  Against the Land Acquisition Ordinance to grab land from farmers without consent or social impact assessment to facilitate private corporates and land mafias.  Against FDI in strategic and core sectors of the economy including railways, defence, insurance etc.  Effective implementation of MGNREGA.  Stop communal attacks on minorities. CITU calls upon the working class of India to make the All India General Strike on September 2, 2015 called by the Central Trade Unions a grand success.
