Maha: Camp for Social Justice and against Communalism Held

Ajit Nawale

The CPI(M) in Maharashtra held a three-day state camp for social justice and against communalism on July 3-5, 2026 at Kavthemahankal in Sangli district of western Maharashtra. It was attended by 252 comrades from 24 districts, 31 of them women. A 90-page booklet of the notes of this camp was given to all participants. After the flag hoisting by veteran leader Narasayya Adam and floral tributes to martyrs, CPI(M) state committee member Umesh Deshmukh welcomed all the participants. State Secretary Ajit Nawale explained the objectives of this camp.

Brinda Karat, Sehba Farooqui, Anand Teltumbde,  Shamsundar Sonnar, Deepak Pawar, Ashok Dhawale,  Rehana Shaikh, Babruwahan Potbhare and Kiran Gahala delivered lectures in different sessions on struggle for women's emancipation, problems of Adivasis and our intervention, problems of minorities and our intervention, annihilation of caste and class struggle, humanistic values in the varkari tradition, ethos of Maharashtra and the Marathi language, grave danger of communalism and how to combat it, and plan of work of social platforms. Dalit poet Nitin Chandanshive greeted the camp and recited some of his poems.

Several important meetings were held on the sidelines of the camp. A meeting of the CPI(M) state committee took stock of the worrisome political situation in Maharashtra, with the thoroughly corrupt and immoral poaching by the BJP of opposition MPs, which has created a crisis in the Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi (MVA). The CPI(M) decided to concentrate on building the independent strength of the Party, by organising eight massive independent regional CPI(M) conventions in the main districts of the state from August 18 to 25.

Three separate meetings of the three state social platforms of the Adivasi Adhikar Rashtriya Manch (AARM -National Platform for the Rights of Adivasis), Jaati Ant Sangharsh Samiti (JASS – Struggle Committee for the Annihilation of Caste), and Alpasankhyak Hakk Sangharsh Samiti (AHSS – Struggle Committee for the Rights of Minorities) were held, in which all the delegates took part as per their preference. These meetings discussed the major issues of these socially oppressed sections and decided on the places and tentative dates of their state conferences. Their main decisions were placed before all delegates on the last day by the convenors.

A meeting of the state committee members of all six class and mass fronts was held. The main objective was to make the August 10 nationwide Jail Bharo struggle a great success in Maharashtra. More than 100 leading activists attended. Ashok Dhawale placed the central understanding of the August 10 struggle, the main target being the anti-people, pro-corporate, communal, manuwadi, authoritarian, and corrupt policies of the BJP-RSS-led union and state governments. CITU state president D L Karad and state secretary M H Shaikh, AIKS state president Umesh Deshmukh and state secretary Ajit Nawale, AIAWU state president Nathu Salve and state secretary Maroti Khandare, AIDWA national vice president Mariam Dhawale, state president Naseema Shaikh and state secretary Prachi Hatiwlekar, DYFI state secretary Datta Chavan and SFI state secretary Somnath Nirmal placed good suggestions.

The main decisions taken in the meeting were: 1. District-level meetings of all six organisations will be held immediately to plan the campaign and the venues of the action; 2. A large number of leaflets, posters, social media posts, press meets, etc. will be prepared for making this an effective campaign; 3. All efforts will be made to ensure the highest possible mobilisation across the state for the Jail Bharo struggle. This joint meeting was followed by brief separate meetings of each class and mass front. Along with the vote of thanks, all the organisers and volunteers of the CPI(M) and the class and mass fronts of Sangli district were warmly felicitated. The camp concluded amid great enthusiasm with resounding slogans. Over Rs 50,000 worth of progressive literature was sold in this state camp.
