Kerala Assembly Elections

The Congress led United Democratic Front (UDF) has secured a comfortable victory in the State Assembly elections, gaining an absolute majority with 102 seats. The LDF managed to win 35 seats, while the NDA secured 3 seats. The UDF repeated the dominance it displayed in the 2025 local body elections in this assembly poll held three months later. Within the UDF, the Congress won 63 seats, the Muslim League 22, and the Kerala Congress 7. In the LDF, CPI(M) secured 26 seats, CPI 8, and RJD 1.
Major UDF leaders including Opposition Leader V D Satheesan, Deputy Leader P K Kunhalikutty (Muslim League), Mons Joseph (Kerala Congress), Apu Joseph (son of P J Joseph), Shibu Baby John (RSP), and C P John (CMP) emerged victorious. However, prominent leaders like T N Prathapan and V S Sivakumar faced defeat.
Among the ministers who contested, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan (Dharmadam), K N Balagopal (Kottarakkara), Saji Cherian (Chengannur), Mohamed Riyas (Beypore), K Rajan (Ollur), G R Anil (Nedumangad), and P Prasad (Cherthala) won their seats.
On the other hand, several ministers including P Rajeev, M B Rajesh, V Sivankutty, V N Vasavan, R Bindu, Veena George, O R Kelu, K B Ganesh Kumar, J Chinchu Rani, A K Saseendran, V Abdurahiman, Roshy Augustine, and Ramachandran Kadannappalli were defeated. LDF Convener T P Ramakrishnan also failed to secure a win in Perambra.
The UDF achieved a clean sweep in Malappuram, Wayanad, Ernakulam, Idukki, and Kottayam districts. Despite the strong pro-UDF wave, Kannur, Thrissur, and Palakkad districts stood by the Left. The LDF put up a fierce fight in Nemom, Kazhakoottam, and Chathannoor—the three constituencies where the BJP emerged victorious.
Opposition Leader V D Satheesan stated that the cabinet formation would proceed according to the directions of the High Command. CPI(M) State Secretary M V Govindan said that the party accepts the people's verdict and will move forward by learning from the defeat.
RESULTS UNEXPECTED: CPI(M)
The CPI(M) State Secretariat has stated that the LDF's defeat in the elections was unexpected. Accepting the defeat, the party will rectify its shortcomings. It salutes all the people who voted for the LDF.
The party is committed to protecting achievements and securing popular demands. The LDF remained in power for 10 years, breaking Kerala's usual pattern of alternating governments. It was able to fulfill all the promises made to the people and move forward by mobilising the public during natural disasters and the pandemic. By moving away from the blind implementation of globalisation policies, the LDF succeeded in leading a once-shattered Kerala toward becoming free from extreme poverty.
Significant progress was made across all sectors. The agricultural and industrial sectors were strengthened. The state became a model for the entire country in welfare schemes. Efforts in health, education, housing, and sanitation served as national benchmarks. While minorities and democrats were attacked across the country, Kerala stood apart as a land of communal harmony. According to NITI Aayog data, it grew into the best state in India. A strong stance was taken in the fight against the central government's moves aimed at forming a theocratic state and in the struggle to protect federalism. Alongside popular protests, these battles continued in the courts, strengthening people's politics across the country.
It was estimated that the LDF government would continue. Criticisms and shortcomings will be examined and resolved. The fact that the BJP managed to win three seats is a matter of extreme gravity. It was the LDF that fought the BJP in these three places and lost by a nominal margin of votes. In all these constituencies, the UDF was in third place. This serves as a reminder of the importance of moving forward more strongly against communal politics in Kerala, which is renowned for its communal harmony—the Secretariat said in a statement.
