Women’s Organisations Call for Immediate Implementation of Women’s Reservation

The All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA), the All India Progressive Women’s Association (AIPWA), the National Federation of Indian Women (NFIW) and the All India Coordination POW-PMS-IJM have called for immediate implementation of women’s reservation.

In the special session of Lok Sabha, the delimitation that the BJP led central government was deceitfully attempting under cover of women’s reservation was rightly defeated. The rhetoric of “nari shakti” was not convincing because their manuvadi understanding on women does not advocate women’s emancipation – they were only using nari shakti to implement their own political agenda of delimitation. The women’s organisations have strongly asserted that the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, 2023, passed by Parliament with the support of the opposition, must be implemented without further delay.

It is a matter of serious concern that its implementation has been deliberately linked to the completion of the census and delimitation process. This conditionality effectively postpones women’s rightful political representation and raises questions about the intent of the BJP-led central government. The truth remains that women are still being denied 33% reservation in the Lok Sabha and State Assemblies.

Veteran leader Geeta Mukherjee who headed the parliamentary standing committee on women's reservation relentlessly advocated the passage of the bill. The women’s organisations recalled the historic and relentless struggle by the women’s movement. They emphasised their collective responsibility to carry forward this legacy and ensure that women’s political rights are not reduced to mere promises and rhetoric.

They have demanded immediate removal of conditions linking implementation to census and delimitation, time-bound implementation of 33% reservation for women, transparent roadmap for execution of the law and democratic consultations with women’s organisations and civil society.

The opposition has consistently supported women’s reservation while opposing attempts to delay it through procedural conditions. The responsibility now lies squarely with the BJP led central government.

The question remains: will the government ensure immediate justice to women, or continue to defer their constitutional rights?

The women’s organisations have called upon all democratic forces to intensify the struggle and mobilise across the country for the immediate implementation of women’s reservation. The call has been supported by the following: People's Union For Civil Liberties, Rajasthan University Women's Association, Women's Rehabilitation Group, Vividha Mahila Alekhan Evam Sandharbh Centre, Bharat Gyan Vigyan Samiti, Rajasthan, Vishakha Mahila Shiksha Evam Shodh Samiti,  National Muslim Women's Welfare Society, Dalit Adhikar Kendra, Jaipur, Agaaz : Dalit MAHILA Sansthan, Rajasthan, Shipayan Sanstha, Rajasthan, Dignity of the Girl Child Foundation, Bal va Mahila Chetna Samiti, Bhilwara, Mahila Samuh, Barmer, Hunar Women, Rajasthan, Prayas, Citizens for Social Action, Ajmer, K Cicily, United Mahila Sangha, Arundhati Dhuru NAPM, Kanti , NFIW, Maish Hasan , Social activist and Janwadi Lekhak Sangh, Vandana Mishra, Journalist and ARTH.
