Repeated Communal Strife in Tripura Harming Peace
Rahul Sinha
The Sangh Parivar is trying to vitiate the atmosphere in Tripura as evident from the number of communal incidents taking place in different parts of the state.
On January 10, a bunch of hoodlums demanded money for Puja from Machhabbir Ali of Shimultala of Saidarpar Panchayet, Fatikray PS, Unakoti district. Following a heated argument and scuffle between two groups leading to injury to four people, a group of RSS/VHP activists chanting 'Jai Sri Ram' set fire to the local mosque, house of the Imam and a few more shops and houses. A truck, an autorickshaw and some other vehicles were also gutted. It is alleged that the local MLA and minister Sudhangshu Das made several provocative posts in social media that further aggravated the situation. Police and central paramilitary forces had to hold a flag march in the area and internet services had to be suspended for 48 hours in the entire district.
On January 11, a tense situation developed at Chandrapur village of Gomati district as RSS tried to prevent cow slaughter. The Sanghi hooligans tried to disrupt the traditional Waz Mehfil. Central Paramilitary forces had to be deployed to avoid further deterioration of the situation.
On January 12, some unknown miscreants placed a Hindu religious symbol inside a mosque in Taraninagar of Fatikray, Unakoti district. Later, police came and removed the symbol. Clearly the plan was to create further communal tension and reap political benefit from polarisation.
The RSS-BJP have been trying to create an atmosphere of hatred against the religious minorities in the state. The recent incidents are proof enough that the ministers too are using their social media handles to spread hatred. However. the police and the administration have not taken any action against them.
Leader of Opposition and CPI(M) polit bureau member Jitendra Chaudhury strongly condemned the communal incidents and said that these were a result of instigating comments of local BJP MLA and minister. He questioned the silence of the Chief Minister on the issue. These situations must be tackled with iron fist by the administration. CPI(M) state secretariat member Tapan Chakrabarty demanded stern legal action against the Minister.
