Chhattisgarh: Attack on Christians, Adivasis Condemned

ON July 30, a delegation of CPI(M), CPI and Kerala Congress (M) leaders met the nuns who have been jailed on false charges of conversion in Chhattisgarh, along with adivasi youth Sukhmai Mandavi. It comprised CPI(M) leader Brinda Karat, CPI(M) MPs K Radhakrishnan and A A Rahim, CPI leader Annie Raja, CPI MP P P Suneer, and KC (M) MP Jose K Mani.

The delegation condemned the free hand given to Bajrang Dal activists who intimidated the nuns in front of the police. Young adivasi women and Mandavi were also beaten and abused, revealing the utter impunity enjoyed by the Bajrang Dal hooligans. The delegation also met members of the Christian community in Durg and colleagues of the nuns.

On July 30, while a bail application was being moved in court, Bajrang Dal hoodlums reached the court and started shouting slogans to prevent the possibility of bail.

The delegation has submitted a memorandum to the chief minister, demanding the unconditional release of the nuns and Mandavi, and withdrawal of the false FIR; the arrest of those who attacked the nuns and assaulted the adivasis; and the guaranteeing of the constitutional right of freedom of conscience and the safety and security of minorities in Chhattisgarh, among other things.
