DEMONSTRATING strong support for the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government's pro-people policies, voters in the Chelakkara Assembly constituency elected U R Pradeep of the CPI(M) by a significant margin of 12,201 votes. The by-election was necessitated after K Radhakrishnan, CPI(M) Central Committee member and former Devaswom Minister, resigned following his election to the Lok Sabha from the Alathur constituency in the last general elections. U R Pradeep secured 64,827 votes (41.44 per cent), while his closest rival, Ramya Haridas, a former MP from Alathur, garnered 52,626 votes (33.64 per cent). The BJP candidate came third with 33,609 votes.
During the campaign, opposition leaders from the United Democratic Front (UDF) had predicted that anti-incumbency in Kerala would influence the results. However, the outcome in Chelakkara reflects continued public support for the LDF.
In a nail-biting contest in the Palakkad Assembly constituency, UDF candidate Rahul Mamgoottathil emerged victorious, defeating his nearest rival, BJP's C Krishnakumar, by a margin of 18,840 votes. Rahul received 58,389 votes (42.27 per cent), while Krishnakumar secured 39,549 votes (28.63 per cent). The BJP's vote share in this seat declined compared to the 2021 Assembly elections when ‘metroman’ E Sreedharan had garnered 50,220 votes. The LDF's independent candidate, Dr P Sarin, finished third. In the previous Assembly election, Congress leader Shafi Parambil had won this seat, but he was later elected to the Lok Sabha from Vadakara earlier this year.
In the Wayanad Lok Sabha constituency, Congress candidate Priyanka Gandhi Vadra registered a resounding victory, defeating her nearest rival, Sathyan Mokeri of the CPI, by a margin of 4,04,619 votes. Priyanka secured 6,12,020 votes (65.03 per cent). The by-election was necessitated after Congress leader Rahul Gandhi vacated the Wayanad seat to retain Rae Bareilly in Uttar Pradesh.
