UP: Campaign Continues against Electricity Privatisation and Smart Meters
THE Communist Party of India (Marxist) Uttar Pradesh committee has initiated a statewide campaign addressing regional issues, particularly focusing on electricity-related concerns, including the privatisation of electricity. The campaign, which commenced in early December, is set to continue throughout January 2024, concluding on February 5 with the submission of a demand letter to the chief minister of UP through dharnas/demonstrations at the offices of executive officers of the relevant electrical corporations across all districts. The campaign also advocates for the reinstatement of engineers, employees, and contract workers who were suspended during the previous 72-hour strike.
As per available information, the campaign has been launched in various districts such as Lucknow, Varanasi, Allahabad, Kanpur, Bulandshahr, Etawah, Kasganj, Etah, Bareilly, Moradabad, Agra, Sultanpur, Bhadohi, Jaunpur, Fatehpur, Mirzapur, Sonbhadra, Chandauli, Ballia, Ghazipur, Mau, Azamgarh, Deoria, Kushinagar, and others. The distribution of pamphlets is underway in accordance with the strength of each district.
In the initial phase of the campaign, Party members and sympathizers, with the support of district and regional branch committees, are reaching out to the public, distributing thousands of pamphlets, and identifying regional issues faced by the people. These issues are being publicised through processions and pamphlet distribution. Memoranda are presented to the executive officer through the SDO at the regional power stations. The second phase, scheduled for February 5, 2024, will witness simultaneous demonstrations at all district headquarters of the electrical corporations, accompanied by the submission of a demand charter to the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh through the executive officers. Information regarding this has already been communicated to the executive officers through a memorandum submitted to the SDO. Despite the severe cold and heavy fog, people are actively participating in the demonstrations.
