Put Western Ghats Report on Hold: CPI(M)

THE Tamilnadu state committee of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has urged the centre to put on hold the Western Ghats Ecology Expert Panel report by K Kasturirangan, and review it after wider discussions to prevent the possible displacement of lakhs of tribal population.

Talking to reporters on the resolutions adopted by the three-day long meeting of the state committee, CPI(M) state secretary G Ramakrishnan said protection of ecology should not be done at the cost of the livelihood of tribal people.

CPI(M), TNUEF Take Up Cudgels for Dalits

A RUMOUR was spread that a dalit boy teased a caste Hindu girl. Without waiting for anything, more than 100 people barged into the dalit area and torched six houses and damaged more than fifty houses. This is not an odd incident that can be brushed aside as some eve-teasing and reaction case. In Dindigul district, Nilakottai taluk, there are two villages called Nadupatti and Kariyampatti. Dalits live in Nadupatti and the caste Hindus live in Kariyampatti. On November 25, a rumour was spread that a boy from Nadupatti had teased a girl from Kariyampatti.

ON December 5, 2013, a five-member delegation from the Odisha state unit of the CPI(M) met the president of India at New Delhi, followed by a meeting with the union home minister the next day. The delegation consisted of the CPI(M) state secretary Janardan Pati, its state secretariat members Santosh Das, Ali Kishore Patnaik and Bishnu Mohanty, and former MLA Laxman Munda. It was led by CPI(M) Polit Bureau member Sitaram Yechury who is leader of the CPI(M) group in Rajya Sabha and by Basudeb Acharia, leader of the CPI(M) group in Lok Sabha.

LDF Intensifies Stir with Cliff House Siege

THE opposition Left Democratic Front (LDF) has intensified its struggle to press for resignation of the Kerala chief minister Oommen Chandy, tainted in the solar panel scam, with a massive siege of Cliff House, official residence of the chief minister at Thiruvananthapuram. This indefinite blockade of the CM’s official residence began on Monday, December 9, as thousands of LDF workers literally laid a siege of it. Hundreds of workers courted arrest.

CPI(M) Submits Memorandum On Amendments to SC/ST POA Act

THE CPI(M) delegation comprising K Varadarajan, Polit Bureau member of the CPI(M), Basudev Acharia, Central Committee member and leader of the CPI(M) group in Lok Sabha, V Srinivasa Rao, Central Secretariat member and G Mamatha, CPI(M) member met Selja, minister for social justice and empowerment, government of India on December 10, 2013 and submitted a memorandum urging the government to move the amendments to strengthen the Prevention of Atrocities Act and adopt them in this winter session of the parliament.

India Yields to Pressure at Bali

THE Indian media for which the WTO meeting at Bali was of no more than passing interest made out on December 7 that India had achieved a great victory at that meeting. Even The Hindu’s headline read: “India’s Stand Prevails at Bali”. The media were merely echoing the view of the Indian government whose commerce minister even took pride in the fact that it was the Indian draft that was put up for endorsement to the member countries. The truth regrettably is exactly the opposite.
