THE entire state of West Bengal came out on the streets in lakhs on September 1 to protest against all forms of imperialist occupations in the world. The rallies expressed anger against imperialist depredations and the neo-liberal economic policies being pursued by the ruling opportunist powers.

AIDWA Holds Peace March

The recent riots in Muzaffarpur are a cause for great concern. Deliberate polarisation is being attempted to divide the people on communal lines. RECENTLY the district of Muzaffar Nagar in the western part of Uttar Pradesh was engulfed by communal violence and some 44 persons had lost their lives by the time of going to press. The fire had spread to the rural areas of the district and to some nearby districts. Thousands of people had left their ancestral villages, while Muzaffar Nagar city and Shamli town had had to be handed over to the army. Some one thousand people had been arrested but the violence seemed to be continuing unabated.

TRIPURA recently surged ahead of Kerala to achieve the top position in the literacy chart in India. The state’s literacy rate now stands at 94.65 percent. In comparison, the literacy rate in Mizoram is 88.80 percent and in Kerala 93.91 percent, as per the available records. Thus, according to the latest figures, the state of Tripura now tops the chart of states in terms of literacy. This is indeed a great achievement.
