CPI(M) MPs to Donate Rs 10 Crores for J&K Flood Relief

THE CPI(M) has decided that all its Members of Parliament shall donate a sum of Rs 50 lakhs from their MPLADS funds for relief and rehabilitation of those who have suffered in the recent unprecedented floods in the state of Jammu & Kashmir. This is in accordance with the rules of the MPLADS that provide for such a prescribed amount of contribution by the MPs in an event of a national disaster.

Thus a total of Rs 10 crores will be contributed by the CPI(M) Members of Parliament towards relief and rehabilitation activities in the state of Jammu & Kashmir.

Tripura Assembly Bypoll: CPI(M) Candidate Wins by Huge Margin

LEFT Front-backed CPI(M) candidate Prabhat Chowdhury won the Manu (ST) assembly by-election by a decisive margin of nearly 16,000 votes. This is the biggest ever margin in the electoral history of this assembly segment. Except Congress candidate who narrowly saved his deposit, all the opposition candidates lost their deposits. The by-election to the constituency was necessitated after Jitendra Chowdhury vacated the seat following his election to the Lok Sabha.

The Polit Bureau of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has issued the following statement on September 15:

THE Polit Bureau of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) expresses its deep grief at the passing away of Comrade Benoy Konar, a senior leader of the Party and the peasant movement. He died on September 14 at the age of 84.

On Bye-Election Results

AS we said earlier, normally bye-election results do not constitute a major reflection on the national standing of any political party, particularly that party which heads the central government at the moment. However, if the recent three rounds of bye-elections since the BJP’s single party majority victory in the Lok Sabha and formation of the government at the Centre are taken together, the trends appear of certain significance.

The Polit Bureau expressed its deep concern at the severe and widespread floods which have affected Jammu & Kashmir. The floods have resulted in the loss of hundreds of lives, widespread destruction of property and displacement of lakhs of people from their homes.
