India’s Shambolic Fighter Jet Procurement

WHAT can you possibly call it when history repeats itself many times over, way beyond tragedy and farce? That old horror story, India’s efforts at “urgent” procurement of fighter aircraft to make up for depleting of fleet strength, is set to start all over again. Authoritative sources have been telling various media outlets that the government will “soon” issue a Request for Proposal (RfP), in other words a tender, for 114 Multi-Role Fighter Aircraft (MRFA) valued at an estimated $20 billion (INR 1 lakh forty thousand crore) to be manufactured in India.

Fiscal Transfers to Capitalists

IT is common for governments these days to provide fiscal transfers to capitalists, whether through reduced corporate tax rates, or by providing direct cash subsidies, to encourage greater investment by them and thereby stimulate the economy. During Donald Trump’s first presidency there had been a cut in corporate tax rate with this objective in mind. In India the Modi government, as is well-known, has given massive tax concessions with the same objective.

However, recent incidents of planned communal violence have tarnished the state's image.

For ninety days, we've demanded justice, rising against the tide of lawlessness engulfing our state. We've amplified the voices of women and marginalised genders, victims of relentless violence. We've battled a crumbling healthcare system and the pervasive insecurity that plagues our workplaces. We've resisted the calculated destruction of our education system.

The Crisis of Liberalism

TRUMP’s victory in the US Presidential election conforms to a pattern presently observable across the world, namely a collapse of the liberal centre and a growth in support either for the Left, or for the extreme Right, the neo-fascists, in situations in which the Left is absent or weak.

The Choices that Australia Makes

IF you go to the bluff at Kings Park in Perth, Australia, you can overlook the Swan River and enjoy a remarkable view. Across the bay, there is a phalanx of steel and glass buildings that rise to the skies. Each of these buildings carries a sign that glistens in the sharp sun: BHP, Rio Tinto, Chevron, Deloitte, and others. Kings Park no longer survives merely with the patronage of the British King, who continues to claim sovereignty over Australia. It is now named Rio Tinto Kings Park, needing the corporate profits from this enormous mining company to sustain its charms.
