PRESIDENT Ramnath Kovind kick-started the budget session of parliament with an address to both houses following which the Union Budget 2022-23 was presented by finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman. The budget has quashed people’s expectations during the crisis of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Budget 2022-23: Cutting-edge Technology to Pvt Companies but, Crutches to BSNL

WHILE placing the budget in the parliament, finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman, proudly announced that 5G service would be launched in this financial year. In the same breath, she announced that 5G service would be launched only by the private telecom companies. It means the public sector BSNL is going to be deprived of 5G technology.It is a known fact that the Modi government discriminated BSNL in 4G technology also. It is already seven years since 4G service was launched in India. Till date, BSNL has not been able to start its 4G service.

Protect the Right to Education of Muslim Girls

THE All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA), in a statement issued on February 9, has strongly condemned the failure of the Karnataka state government to protect the rights of Muslim girl students. It is unacceptable that these students are being denied their right to education because of wearing the hijab, it said.It is shocking that the state government has irresponsibly stood by watching the issue spiral in the state without intervening proactively to fulfill its constitutional duty to protect the right to education of Muslim girls.

KERALA: On the SilverLine Project

DESPITE the mounting protest of opposition and the manipulations of a section of media, the government of Kerala is making efforts to materialise the SilverLine project, a semi high speed rail corridor. The project was one of the major promises of the LDF in its election manifesto in the 2021 assembly elections. The LDF government envisages this as the major infrastructure development project. This project is designed to avoid traffic snarls, road accidents and air pollution from vehicles, a major concern of the state.

A Budget Whose Silences are Ominous

NO budget in recent memory has been presented at a time when the economy is in such dire straits: unemployment is so bad that there are job riots in Bihar and UP; wealth and income inequalities are among the worst in the world; millions more have been pushed into poverty because of the pandemic and the lockdown; and inflation is accelerating even in the midst of massive unemployment.
