Freebies and Lollipops to the Corporates

CUTTING down expenditures that impact upon the poor while bailing out the corporates has been the hallmark of neoliberal policies. Profit making by any means and favouring the rich by way of offering subsidies from state exchequer to the big corporates is being legitimised as pro-market and development enhancing strategies. Hardly any issues are being raised by the mainstream media on these sops while subsidies to farmers or to the middle class in terms of provisioning of electricity, water, education or health services has been termed as ‘freebies’ granted from tax payers money.

AIPSO Condemns Attacks on Democracy in Brazil

THE All India Peace and Solidarity Organisation (AIPSO), in a statement issued on January 9, has condemned the right-wing attempts to destabilise the recently elected government of President Lula in Brazil. The far right-wing supporters of Jair Bolsonaro, who was defeated in the recently concluded presidential elections in Brazil, attempted to occupy the Congress, judiciary and executive buildings in Brazil.

AIDWA National Conference: Fight against Corporate-Communal Nexus

THE 13th national conference of the All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA) was held at Thiruvananthapuram from January 6-9, 2023. Telangana: CITU Conference Resolves to Intensify Workers’ Struggles

THE state conference of CITU Telangana committee was held successfully at Comrade Mallu Swarajyam Nagar in Siddhipet from December 21-23, 2022.  Thousands of workers participated in a rally held from Zilla Parishad High School to Comrade Sunnam Rajaiah meeting ground in the city ahead of the public meeting on the last day of the conference. Sivan Kutty, Kerala state labour and education minister, attended the public meeting as the chief guest and CITU central leaders Tapan Sen, Hemalata and M Saibabu participated.

Telangana: AIAWU State Conference Begins with a Huge Public Meeting

THE third state conference of the All India Agricultural Workers’ Union was held from December 29-31, 2022 at Khammam. More than six hundred delegates from all corners of the Telangana state attended the conference.On December 29, a huge public meeting was organised at SR & BGNR College grounds, Khammam town. Storm Clouds over India’s Balance of Payments

INDIA’S current account deficit for the second quarter (July-September) of 2022-23 has reached a massive $36.4 billion which is 4.4 per cent of the gross domestic product, higher than at any time in the last nine years. It is only in October-December 2012 that the absolute level of the current deficit had been $32.6 billion which was 6.7 per cent of the GDP.By contrast the current account deficit had been $18.2 billion in the first quarter of 2022-23 or 2.2 per cent of GDP, and $9.7 billion or 1.3 per cent of GDP in the second quarter of 2021-22, i.e., exactly a year ago.
