WFTU Holds Asia Pacific Regional Meet

THE World Federation of Trade Union (WFTU) held its Asia Pacific Regional (APR) meeting in Port Dickson, Malaysia on October 25-26, 2013. The National Union of Banking Unions (NUBE) hosted the meeting. Around 140 delegates represented some 15 countries and several trade unions internationals (TUIs), the sectoral organisations of WFTU. The countries represented were India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, Nepal, Philippines, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Cambodia, Malaysia, Iran, People’s Republic of China, Sudan and Argentina, some by observers.

Terror Attack in Nairobi

NAIROBI, the capital of Kenya, was among the first major cities to experience an Al Qaeda terror attack. In fact, the 1998 dual attack on the American embassies in Nairobi and Dar-as-Salaam, the capital of Tanzania, announced the terror organisation’s arrival on the world stage. This time the terror attack in the Kenyan capital, which started on September 21, was a prolonged and bloody affair which lasted for more than three days.

HC Finds Magistrate’s Faults in Rape Probe

IN what has surfaced as an unprecedented move to sabotage the solar panel scam investigation, the vigilance registrar of Kerala High Court found on November 13, 2013, that the additional chief judicial magistrate of Eranakulam had failed to record the main portions of the secret statement made by Saritha S Nair, the prime accused in the case. In this secret statement, she is said to have revealed that she was raped by many top politicians of the ruling United Democratic Front (UDF).

CPI(M) Polit Bureau member Brinda Karat has attacked the Forest Department of Andhra Pradesh government for its illegal, anti-tribal actions in the state. She charged the Department officials of turning into land-grabbers by evicting the rightful tribal owners. She called upon the tribals to wage a united struggle to protect their rights.

ALL over the country, AIDWA units are engaged in a campaign from November 7-15, to disseminate the message of its forthcoming national conference. The tenth all India conference of the AIDWA is occurring at a particularly significant moment of time, when the challenges before the women’s movement in our country are increasing by the day. In the struggle against gender oppression, and the fight for justice, and equality, AIDWA has been playing a leading role over the past three years, and has been uniting multiple voices of protest against the escalating instances of violence against women.
