Geneva Accord: A Breakthrough

THE agreement reached at in Geneva between the P5+1 powers and Iran on the nuclear issue represents a diplomatic breakthrough.This interim agreement for six months has the potential for a comprehensive settlement to be worked out. The agreement has come after repeated rounds of negotiations between the five permanent members of the UN Security Council: United States, Russia, China, France and Britain, plus Germany on the one hand and Iran on the other.

THE ninth conference of the All India Plantation Workers’ Federation (AIPWF) which concluded in Agartalaon November 24,2013 left an indelible impression on all the delegates who participated in it from all the major plantation states in the country.More than 200 delegates from Kerala, Karnataka, Tamilnadu, West Bengal, Assam and Tripura attended the conference.The delegates from Kerala came in their full strength despite the long distance. STFI Collects One Crore Signatures ON WOMEN’S ISSUES

ON November 18, leaders of the School Teachers’ Federation of India (STFI) met the president of India to submit one crore signatures in support of women teachers, girl children and women’s demands. The disabled continue to be looked upon as embodiments of sin or as omens of ill-luck. The situation began to alter somewhat along with the advancement of science and technology. Attempts were made to bring them in the areas of education, recreation etc. The first school for the visually impaired was set up in India in the 1880s.

Political Morality Declining Unabated

THE Haryana state unit of the CPI(M) has expressed astonishment whether, with the current speed of legislators and ministers of Haryana being chargesheeted and sent to jail, the next assembly session would have to be convened inside jail premises. Issued from Rohtak on November 15, a press release of the party after a meeting at the state centre said that six legislators were already in jail and half a dozen more were facing criminal charges.
