Peasantry Will Resist State & Corporate Attack on Land, Agriculture and Livelihood

THE Central Kisan Committee of AIKS met in Delhi on February 15-16 to discuss the prevailing agrarian situation in the country. It has decided to join hands with all like-minded left and progressive organisations of peasants, agricultural workers, dalits and tribals to resist the attack unleased by the Centre and various state governments on land, agriculture and the livelihood of the peasantry.

In India all sorts of politicians face corruption charges, some face trial in courts, some are convicted, some are acquitted, some go on appeal etc..etc..  Does CPI(M) treat one is innocent till final conviction in any court of law?  What is the yardstick CPI(M) adopts to deal with them? S Manohar, Melagaram,Tamil Nadu. Corruption is a serious problem affecting the country. Much of the high level corruption stems from the big business-politician-bureaucrat nexus. Given this fact, very few politicians who have misused their office face corruption charges.

Nationwide Protests against Centre over Transport Fees Hike

Transport sector workers and vehicle owners staged protests in different parts of the country against the central government’s decision to hike fees for driving licence, testing, issue/renewal of registration certificate among others.The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways had issued a notification on December 29, 2016 enhancing exorbitantly the fees for driving licence, testing, issue/renewal of registration certificate, fitness certificate, change of address, and recording alteration in registration certificate.

Peasant Conference in Kathmandu

The South Asian Peasants Convergence (SAPC) on Food Sovereignty and Peasants Rights held at Kathmandu, Nepal on February 2-3, 2017, was attended by over 100 delegates from Nepal, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. It was hosted by the All Nepal Peasants Federation (ANPFa), an umbrella association of Nepali peasants fighting against feudalism, imperialism and neoliberalism that was founded in 1951. With the ushering in of the Democratic Republic of Nepal the organisation has expanded in keeping with the evolution of peasant consciousness and struggles.

The week in parliament

The second week of the Budget Session started with the discussion on the Motion of Thanks on the President’s Address, wherein all the opposition parties slammed the government’s decision of demonetisation which has resulted in job losses, economic slowdown, agricultural distress and overall misery for the people.Speaking on this in the Rajya Sabha, Sitaram Yechury said demonetisation is the biggest disruption that has happened to the country. It has disrupted the normal existence of a vast majority of the people and their day-to-day livelihood.

Vemulaghat Struggle Reaches 250th Day

TelanganaRelay hunger strike launched by the farmers and other people affected under the proposed Mallannasagar reservoir at Vemulaghat village in Toguta Mandal of Siddipet district reached its 250th day on the February 9. This determined struggle of the people affected under the Mallannasagar reservoir, which is a part of larger Kaleswaram project with a storage capacity of 50 tmc ft water going on near the farm house of chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao, has been supported by the CPI(M), several other political parties and mass organisations.
