AIKS Leads Greater Noida Farmers Struggle

THE All India Kisan Sabha has been leading a continuous struggle of farmers from Greater Noida for a just compensation for the land acquired by the Greater Noida Development Authority (GNDA) since April 25. On May 15, on the 21st day of the indefinite mahapadav under the aegis of the Gautam Buddha Nagar committee of AIKS, a 5000 strong rally of farmers was taken out to the GNDA premises and a symbolic gherao of the office was undertaken.

TN: The Struggle of Yamaha Motor Workers Union

THE Indian Yamaha Motor Workers Union (IYMTS) has won a landslide victory, receiving 96 per cent of the valid votes cast in the secret ballot election held on May 3, 2023, at the India Yamaha Motors Factory in Vallam, Tamil Nadu, to accord recognition to the majority union.Around four years ago, the workers at the India Yamaha Motor Factory formed a union called IYMTS under the leadership of CITU. However, the office bearers of this union engaged in anti-union activities that went against the interests of the workers.

HP: Shimla Municipal Corporation Elections: A Resounding Rejection of BJP's Anti-People Policies

THE Shimla Municipal Corporation election results suggest that the citizens have expressed their discontent and unhappiness with the policies that were implemented by the BJP government and the municipal corporation over the last five years. The BJP faced a significant setback in these elections, securing less than half of the wards they previously held. Conversely, the Congress party won a decisive majority, while the CPI(M) succeeded in maintaining its hold on the Summerhill ward, with Virendra Thakur emerging as the winner.

Vindictive Action on Postal Unions

THE Department of Posts under the Modi government withdrew the recognition of the National Federation of Postal Employees (NFPE) and the All India Postal Employees Union (AIPEU)  - Group 'C' on April 26, 2023. NFPE and AIPEU-Group 'C' have a paid membership of 70 per cent among the postal employees of the country. Both these organisations are spearheading struggles against the government's attempts to convert the postal department into a corporation and subsequently hand it over to private/corporates.

A New York Times News Service report reproduced in The Telegraph of Kolkata (May 7), discusses the findings of a global public opinion survey carried out by the Bennett Institute of Public Policy of Cambridge University. These show that the Ukraine conflict had shifted public sentiment “in developed democracies in East Asia and Europe as well as the United States of America, uniting their citizens against both Russia and China and shifting mass opinion in a more pro-American direction”; by contrast “outside this democratic bloc, the trends were very different”.

Crucial State Elections in Karnataka Conclude

KARNATAKA has voted in the most crucial state elections before 2024. Preliminary estimates suggest that the voter turnout was 72.67 per cent, but the final figures are expected to increase. In the 2018 elections, the voter turnout was 72.36 per cent. According to exit polls and other indications, the BJP is likely to be voted out, and the Congress party is expected to form the next government. The election was fiercely contested, with close contests in almost all constituencies, and an intense campaign in the last few days.

Indian Railways to Shut Down 5 Printing Presses, Will Outsource Ticket Printing

Disregarding TU opposition, printing presses in Chennai’s Royapuram, Secunderabad, Mumbai, Howrah and Delhi’s Shakurbasti will be closed down.THE ministry of railways has decided to move forward with its 2019 decision to shut down its five printing presses and outsource the printing of tickets, according to a report published in The Hindu.
