The Fiscal Requirement of A Welfare State

THE post-second world war period had seen a spate of welfare state measures in the advanced capitalist countries, especially in Europe, in emulation of what the Soviet Union was effecting. Capitalism had to accept these measures, notwithstanding its hostility to them, because it was in the midst of an existential crisis, weakened by the war, shaken by the upsurge in working-class anger, and terrified by the spread of socialism in Eastern Europe. With the subsequent consolidation of its position, however, its hostility to welfare state measures manifested itself openly.

26 November 2022: Lakhs of Farmers March to Raj Bhawans

AT the call of the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM), lakhs of farmers, supported by workers, students, youth, women, and ordinary people, held mega foot-marches and rallies on the Raj Bhawans (Governor’s Residences) on November 26, 2022, at 25 state capitals of the country. Rallies and demonstrations were also held that day at more than 300 district headquarters and numerous tehsil headquarters.

22nd World Peace Council Assembly Held in Vietnam

THE 22nd Assembly of the World Peace Council (WPC) was held in Hanoi, Vietnam from November 22-24, 2022. One hundred and eight delegates, representing 58 organisations from 53 countries participated in this Assembly. The Vietnam Peace Committee (VPC) hosted this event for the first time in Vietnam. Three representatives from the All India Peace and Solidarity Organisation (AIPSO), one of the founder organisations of the WPC, participated in the Assembly.The WPC Assembly was preceded by a meeting of the Executive Committee of the WPC on November 21.

Hyderabad to Host 17th all India Conference of SFI

HAVING been chosen as the venue of the 17th all-India conference of the Students’ Federation of India, Hyderabad becomes the first city to host the highest conference of SFI two times in history. The land of the heroic Telangana uprising was the venue of the 12th all-India conference, held in 2005. The 17th conference will take place from December 13 to 16 at Osmania University. This all-India conference is happening after four years since the completion of the 16th conference in Shimla in November 2018. The conference was delayed a year due to the pandemic.

CPI(M) Leaders Attacked in Tripura

Another brutal attack on the CPI(M) leaders and workers was unleashed in Charilam Bazar, Sepahijala district, by the ruling BJP miscreants who also killed Comrade Sahid Miah, (65), a farmer, former Party member and presently closely associated with the party. This attack took place on November 30.
